Gonna do a cam only install

Gonna do a cam only install
I am going to be doing a cam install on my SS, most likely go with a 228 cam, .588 lift, 114 LSA. I want a decent power gain, not trying to hit 400 whp, but not a choppy idle so it seems the 114 LSA cam will give me a smooth idle. I may go with the TSP cam, the AFR cam is a lot more, not sure why. I will be replacing the pushrods, springs, & timing chain. I have heard horror stories about Comps springs breaking, would like another recomendation on getting some good springs, good for .600 lift. I read about degreeing the cam, how important is that? That can only be done with an adjustable timing chain set correct? Why cant you just install the cam & line up the timing marks? My car has 117000 miles, appreciate your recommendations.

Well supposedly the comp 918s are fixed.
I went with the PAC 1218, very good spring for up to 0.600 lift, good price too:

Not saying this because I have a new set going up for sale.. but PAC 1218's. (They were advertised as 1518's, which is what I needed...long story)
PAC made the Comp918 spring before Comp got cheap and switched vendors to cut costs... after they did, that's when all the problems started popping up with the 918...
massls1guy - are you positive that link is to PAC springs? If so, that's a good $60 cheaper than anywhere I've seen.. I'd bet they are comp springs.

I was listening to some cam sound clips on youtube last night. It seems the 228 style cam is not a real small cam, more toward mid to high range for cam size. They all sounded pretty loud, rough idling. Now some of the 224 cams sounded better as far as idle quality. I dont want a real radical cam but I dont want something too small. I am thinking maybe I should go with a 224 & around a .560-.570 ish lift 114 LSA. I want some performance but good street drivability. Something I can have fun with at the track here & there.

Hey did you pick up an ls6 intake yet? I'm getting a fast so ill have mine off and we live close.
Check into vengeance racing they have good prices for springs , etc. They also have an ls2 ported oil pump 130. You probably can't go wrong with 224 or 228 but I'd personally go 228. Its a mid sized at best

Get a new ls6 oil pump preferablly ported. 98-00 pumps are not as well made as 01-02. also u have over 100k on the clock your stock pump may go out. you have to remove the pump to install the chain you might as well throw on a fresh one to keep a clear mind : ) when u install carefull not to smash the oil pump o ring

228R camshaft is a great camshaft that's for sure! I think you'll like the crap out of it! You can run a search for my user name & see tons of dyno & engine dyno data on this camshaft.
Make sure you buy new springs, sometimes you can buy a good used camshaft, but a used valve spring is way risky!!
