I was told .030-0.050" preload - I set mine at 0.040". You want preload to be approx. in the middle of the lifter travel.

Ok cool ill try and set my morrel lifter perload at .040.

But if its closer to .025-.030 does that lessen the amount of oil going to the top of the motor ?

No. I spoke with Morel on this a few years ago, they didn't want to see the preload less than 0.030" cold.

Have either of you noticed your Morels to be excessively noisy or prone to bleed down when left to sit for, say,a week or so ? Mild cam,.605 lift, and adj Jesel rockers, still seems noisier than it should be esp cold. BTW,this is my second set, first ones had a couple collapse(less than 500 miles)

Lifter pre-load is the distance between the retaining snap ring and the push rod seat in the lifter when the lifter is on the heel of the cam lobe with the valve closed. A number of things can affect lifter pre-load:

1.Resurfacing the heads and/or block deck

2.Changes in camshaft diameter

3.Changes in push rod length

4.Changes in valve length

5.Changes in rocker arm length or geometry

6.Changes in head gasket thickness

7.Changes in lifter height

8.Valve job

9.Different rocker arm stands or shafts

Be sure and check the valve geometry and use either longer or shorter push rods to correct the geometry.
In some cases a shim under the rocker shaft may be required to maintain correct geometry.

When installing new hydraulic lifters, follow the proper OEM procedures for checking and
adjusting lifter pre-load.

hope it helps

There's power to be had in adjusting preload. For instance running very little to almost no preload. However, I do not recommend this for a daily driver.

Yes and no. In my old setup, Dart heads/Crane cam/Crane rockers I had lifter noise after 20 seconds from start that would last about a minute. If it was colder, it would be worse. With the new setup, AFR heads/AFR cam (Comp)/YT rockers I have no noise at all. Not sure why at this point. I did find a thinner oil would help with the old setup. I usually run German Castrol 0W-30 but when I went to Amsoil 5W-30 they did quiet down some. Don't let the first number fool you, at normal temps the Germal Castrol has higher viscosity.
