^how do you have 243's stock? f-bodies never came with 243 heads. they only ever came with 853 or 241 head castings. your stock '01 heads should be 241's...

There seems to be a large lack of reading comprehension on the boards these days.
To answer the original posters question about budget minded heads:
-PRC (Sold through TSP)
-Patriot
-TEA (Total Engine Airflow)
All 3 of those companies offer cylinder heads below $1500, and all 3 offer castings that don't require $400 rockers like the TFS. Check those out, make the calls to the shops and voice your goals. Then go from there on who makes you feel most comfortable.
Moving this to internal.

if your on a budget the 5.3's are a great choice. I'm running the 233/239 cam with a fast intake and made numbers in sig. Great driveability also. I'm happy with my purchase.

agreed a hair more than budject but excellent bang for the buck would be the tea ls6 stg 2.0s...
if you are looking for a hair cheaper go with the 5.3 tsp's...or a set of stock 243s that are milled some...

I don't understand going budget on heads. Just save your money until you can afford what you want. No need to rush into something if you are hurting for cash. A lot of people buy stuff on the boards and then realize they couldn't afford and then take a loss just to get rid of it. Keep your eyes open, you may find a set of TFS 215's for sale by someone that needs the cash.
TFS 215's is my vote for when you can afford them. Budget and Heads shouldn't be in the same sentence unless big comes before budget. JMO.
Keep in mind how much power potential there is in a good set of heads vs some avg brand.
