Default Is it okay to flush oil pan with water??

My oil pan is off the car right now because of a blown headgasket, and its full of the usual peanut butter/milkshake goodness from the coolant. Is it okay to use a spray nozzle and a hose and just flush out all the gunk from the pan, let it air dry and then reinstall? I got as much of the gunk out as I could by pouring and draining it, but theres still a good amount of residue in there. Im unable to really work on the car because of an injury, so just looking to do small cleanup items while I have the time. Itll probably be months before the car is ready to run again, so I have plenty of time to let it dry. Or is that a no no to use water?

brake clean works well also. make sure you pull off the baffle in the bottom of the pan also. you will have some gunk under there also.

It's aluminum, so it won't rust. If you leave it for that long, all traces of moisture will evaporate out of it.

You could even do it if you didn't have time on your side by heating the water out of it.

No problem.

Brake cleaner, a couple of rags, and a spray nozzle on your garden hose.

I read the title and hoped you weren't about to fill your oil fill / cylinder head area with water to flush the engine.

A thread like that would go down in history on several levels of epic proportions.

That way sounds MUCH easier than taking the pan off! Why didnt I think of that! lol

I just removed the baffle, hosed it out, and wiped up all the remaining with a clean rag, and it looks good. Thanks for the replies, though

Water doesnt do much to oil by itself. You need something that will cut/clean the oil. Like many have said carb cleaner, brake cleaner, simple green, even dish soap should work. Make sure after you use whatever to rinse it good and dry it good.

I agree, but there's few things left on the internet that manage to amaze me.

Happened on a mustang forum. Guy with a NA cobra was changing the oil, and said it was dripping out too slow, so he flushed it out with the garden hose. yea....

I remember taking my intake manifold off a few years ago, and found a socket inside! Im still trying to figure out how that got in there... its not like the intake can stand up on end so the opening is facing up while youre working... Unless it was sabotage! haha
