LS timing chain damper opinion

LS timing chain damper opinion
Got an 01 5.3, building very mild & near stock LSx, picked up a replacement (LS2?) timing chain & black damper, but the block has no provisions for it. Engine is down to the crank & caps now, wondering if drilling & tapping the block should be done, or if I should put the block back together without worrrying about the (mentioned) slack the new chain may have..

There is a few threads about this. The way the holes are supposed to be it puts one bolt hole almost off the flat boss thats on the front of the motor. I believe some have still drilled and tapped it. You can find some pics of one installed if you search around.

Here is the one I was referring to, there are others that have drilled the new hole spacing on the old block. I don't like that approach.

This is my block that a buddy and I drilled and tapped to for the LS2 Dampner. The picture is off center, not the holes lol. It was not difficult per se but nerve wracking. I did it with the rotating assembly in place. I've gotten the car up and running since then and gotten a few hundred miles on it no problem. It is pretty close to the bosses but we went through with it anyways as you can see.

sorry for the late reply, but thanks Sube.. I'll probably go ahead and drill & tap my block for the peace of mind.. I completely agree with the nerve wracking part. Ive heard about a template that came with (LS2?) dampers, but have yet to see a picture, or locate one

When we did it we had vacuum going at the same time. Don't use a tiny bit for your pilot hole, I actually broke a bit in the hole when we were pilot drilling because I went too undersize. That was a freaking chore to get out and I'm glad my friend did it cause I almost pissed myself when it happened. It turned out great though. Also use cutting lube, helps keep the particles on the bit and clean often. We had the motor upside down and stuffed rags right where the cam is.
