Default Looking for 400-500hp on a daily driver with Heads/cam/intake

You've heard it before. You've talked about it before. Now it's my turn though. Let's start with what I have.

I have a 98 TA, Automatic transmission with shift kit, Long tube headers, Flomaster Exhaust(I want a different muffler btw too), K&N air box with 113k miles on the car and motor thus far.

I have been reading everyone's posted. I've seen some things I liked but what about a daily driver within aspiration. Making anywhere from 400-500hp to the wheels. Using a cam/head set up for later on when money is saved further done the road. I want to rebuild the bottom end so I want to keep that in mind as well.

So, I want to replace the Oil pump, Timing belt, Cam, Heads and intake manifold. I was think LS6 parts but wasn't sure. I am in a budget sadly so I need a good set up. Maybe there are package deals or something out there that is fairly cheap but reliable and gets the job done. I want to drive her around town so nothing radical "yet".

So what do you guys think. because this money is burning me up to buy something today but I don't want to jump knee deep in **** I can't get out of.

I like the way you worded that lol.

Subscribe for info. I'm in a similar boat with the same goals in mind.

I'm thinking of starting with a new block though.. which is going to cost me a fortune I can already tell.

Pretty broad. Narrow down your power goals (big difference between a 400rw set up and 500rw). How many CI are you looking to do this with?

just throwing this out there as it has been many times in other threads like this. If you are budget minded, why dont you just throw a 100shot on it and call it a day. That will still make it DD friendly and still have that available HP when you want it.
I would think those power levels with an auto would call for a pretty agressive cam which would lead to a decently high stalled converter which would in turn be less DD friendly. Im not auto guy but that is what ive read on here A LOT!

You are headed in the right direction. With one of our heads/cam combo's with a fast intake you can be well in the mid 400 range. Throw a Katech C5R timing chain and a Meiling Oil pump. I'll send you a PM in much more detail...

TSP heads are on sale.or look at some trick flow 220 heads from vengeance, free milling and shipping..get a custom cam from Patrick-G.with a fast 92mm intake and alot of other right parts you could make 475 rwhp.

Okay, I like what I am Hearing so far.

I never liked NOS though. Non aspirated motors breed more complications in the long run my opinion.

by next month I should have about 2500 in parts and another two months the cost for labor to have a shop do it. That's the goal as of now.

Question is: What is non streetable? is a 220 head good for the everyday. Does a 92mm intake provide a good air flow with out sucking my gas tank dry. Just some small questions.

do you have any friends that are good at wrenching?go to ls1howto.com and do the install your self ,use the saved money for parts upgrade.on a budget consider some used 243 heads($400).get a used ls6 intake($300) and a ported TB($60).consider a TSP torquer v2 cam pkg or get a custom cam($400),order this last after you have all of your other parts.you will need bigger injectors ,get them from FIC.what stall converter do you have?get you timing chain, gaskets ,and bolts from TSP.do a compression check before you do any thing else.install a cut out on you exhaust ,this will help a little.just some suggestions to start the ball rolling.do more research and question to find your direction.

Would love to. But again. It'll just create more headaches later on.

In theory, any modifications to your car, could potentially cause problems and "headaches".

You MAY see 430-450hp with a good set of heads(trick flow 215 or AFR 215 heads) a ported fast a good exhaust and all the boltons. This is the trick here, dyno on a dyno jet because in most cases they read higher. I lost 25hp going from a jet to a stang dyno. I have a head and cam package from vengeance(trickflow) and they were worth the money over the ported l92 heads i had. AFR and TRICKFLOW do perform better then budget heads everytime i used them over the budget heads. Goodluck.

as mentioned already,do the stall...hp numbers on an auto will be low, but the stall will make it faster.
Also when I did my h&c, I ended up having to rebuild the transmission and buy a new rear end...which added up to several thousands that I had not intended on spending right away.
My numbers in the sig are from a stang dyno with big wheels, so its easily in the 400s if its a dynojet with smaller wheels. I picked up alot of parts used to save some cash, my set up includes 92/92, patriot 243 heads, thunder custom cam, kooks lt, borla, yank 3600ss, moser 12 bolt rear with 3.73 gears.
If you have a garage and a few days, I would do the install yourself...saves alot of money that you can put into more parts.

400-500 rwhp is a huge difference. 500 rwhp trans will need to be upgraded quickly.

tsp 5.3 heads, ms3 cam, fast intake/tb and a good tune should put you around 410-430 hp mark. throw in a nice yank 3600-4000 converter to make it move... my stock short block ls1 with that setup and long tube tsp headers made 426 rwhp, after that its making it hook and go, that should last you thru 11s all day.
