Default Heads and a Cam, what would you order?

OK, new to the game. I have read how this combo can push you over the 400 hp range. So my question is this. For a 2002 Firehawk A4, what Cam and Heads would you install, give me some prices on quality products and the cost for installation. What kind of Hp gains are we talking about here? Seems like this combo may be the best bang for the buck! Thanks

For Heads - Check out Absolute, TEA, MTI, and APE.
If money is no object check out AFR.

For CAM - call each shop, tell them what you want (Power, drivability, etc.) and have them recommend the cam.

Exactly Hoss... you have to talk to the shop that's going to do the work to your car and they will help you make that decision based on what your requirements are. I'm extremly happy with the work I had done a month ago from ARE.

TEA stage 1.5 5.3's and a tr224 for good manners. You could go much bigger on the cam, just depends on what setup you're looking for.

Depends on what your goals for the car are as well-like what kinda gains are you looking for. My setup listed below works really well and the car is a beast at the track!! I would check with the above listed shops tell them what your looking for and what gains your expecting with the mods and they will guide you from there!!

in an auto its highly unlikely to make 400hp to the wheels w/heads&cam but not supporting mods...400 to the crank maybe...otherwise make sure you at least have an ls6 intake, headers, cutout, lid, pulley, EWP

I'd say AS 5.3l SII heads with TSP 231/237 cam. That and all bolt on should put you right around 400RWHP with a descent converter (pt4000 and 3.73 gears)

So what does installation cost, and how about parts...ballpark range please. And what other bolt ons, suspension, etc...would be beneficial when you are pushing 400+HP. Really, I'm not hooked on hitting the drag strip yet, since I haven't been yet....in fact, I never took a run as I don't know where the closest one is to me in Northwest Indiana. But, thanks for all the part suggestions.

I'm planning on getting a lot done this summer. I've waited 6 years to get this car, and now that I have it, well it's time to build a beast. So, I got money to spend and a dream to build, just need some advice on what to throw in it. I'm wanting 400hp to keep up with most anything on the road...I've driven around a V6 camaro for the past 9 years...that's torture enough for all the times I've had a V8 screw with me.....so it's pay back time!

Hopefully in about a year I'll have a FM13 on 112 in my car and if I have enough money, a set of AFR's.

On an A4, you'll need 1st and foremost to get ya started....

-Torque Converter
-Long Tube headers
-Some sort of exhaust mod (either catback or a cutout).

There's a few monster cams out there that can get ya to 400rwhp on stock heads on an A4, but for an A4, if 400 is your target, then go with Stage 1.5 or 2 Heads and a medium sized Cam (228ish on the duration).

Check out ls1howto.com for install info.

Installation on heads, cam, headers & intake will probably be $1000 to $1500 depending on where you are and who is doing the work if a shop does it. You might find an individual that's willing to do it for you for $750 to $1000.

TEA heads & FMS cam, I also think Absolute & MTI are well worth considering.

What size camshaft are you looking into? How much converter are you running? If I were you I would call some of the shops & talk to them about what they prefer when shooting for your hp range.
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/151632-pp-stg-2-5-7-heads-224r-cam-dyno-results.html
Here's a link to a PP&TSP package that just went 398rwhp with a small camshaft in a a4 c5 Keep in mind if you want a little extra Texas Speed now offers a race version of the LS6 style head & a race version of the 5.3l head. Race heads are going to be all assembled & machined here in Lubbock, TX at one of the best machine shops in the country!!

Either way you decide call several shops & talk to them about what they prefer for your application.
