Default Any cam guru feel like spec'ing a cam!?

I'm about to pull the trigger for a top end rebuild. Just before doing so, I would like to get advice for my new cam. I'm in touch with a sponsor here but I want to gather some idea too.
Here's the mod list and goal;
-ported fast 92
-cnc 243 with bigger valve
-ud pulley
-old 1 3/4 and ORY, slp dual dual
-stock 243
-150 wet kit
-lid, 85 maf
-monster 3 clutch, flywheel
-old TR cam unknown spec(very similar to a 224 IMO)
404RWHP on a mustang dyno. Peak hp at 6000-6200. Carry to 6500. Very good low end grunt, rough idle.
-forged rods and pistons with valve relief.

Goal;
- not a DD, highway roll racing and cruise, no Traffic, no drag, getting the max out of my setup without going to big. I don't mind if It's rough, but I want to keep some mid power because of my stock gear and street driving. Looking to get 440rwhp. 450 is my ultimate goal. But I rather go smaller with a better powerband.

I'm thinking something like 230-238 610-610 lift to go with my psi 1511 springs...

Only after starring at your avitar for half an hour did I finally read your goal...
Based on your gearing and driving descriptions I was thinking the exact same
230/238...610ish lift and like 111 ls +3deg.....I'm an EPS fan so Geoff Skinner
is who I'd suggest for exact specs....Also Pat G. seems to like the EPS intake
lobes combined with the quieter (gentle) LSL exhaust profiles.

I have a cam that PatG specd for me being sent to me right now that I ordered through Geoff at EPS..

It's a 227/230 .614/.609 111+2 lsa for sale..

It was specd for my 243 head ls1 engine, automatic with 3600 stall.. perfect for daily driving..

It was 420 shipped from EPS, Ill let it go brand new for 375 shipped.. let me know, I can email you the Cam spec build sheet from PAtG as well for it..

A guy that is on this forum had this cam on his stock 243 head trans am and made 410/390 to the floor...

Have to be careful when going with bigger than stock valves and milling. I would definitely email Pat G and pay the $25 for him to spec you a cam. I would bet he would probably spec something in the 230/234 range .610-.615 lift 112+2 probably on EPS or LSL lobes. It is worth the extra to have him do it.

So with valve reliefs you can mill to lets say 59cc and run a healthy sized cam, and get to 11.5-1 compression...

with a big cam like the "MS3 and similar cam's" they are max effort cams and need time to spool up... So your going to need big gears, big stall if auto.. It's for pure hauling ***, never have drived one red light to red light

but from just reading about it, it just seems like its overkill for the streets. A smaller custom cam will outperform it on the street and have better driveability..

And the cam I have and other custom cam's with a good tune are making the same if not better hp than a MS3 and bigger cams.. its all in the tune and your car set up

The max I will go is a TSP 233/239, or a 236-240 streetsweeper, g5x3..but a 230-234 sounds good.

With higher compression and no daily driving, you can afford to go a little bigger than most people. The ported heads and FAST intake mean you won't need quite as much duration to make big power, but the highway runs typically mean lots of rpm so you'd benefit from stretching the exhaust a little more. If you get your static compression up above 11.2:1, you can widen your LSA a little bit. So to hit your goal of 440-450 on any dyno around, you're going to need to be fairly big so I'd recommend a G5X3 equivalent, but on more modern lobes (to make it more stable with your 1511 beehives). I'd go with a 234/242 .602/.615" 112LSA +4 to hit the big mid-range and upper power numbers. If you wanted a profile with a little more low and mid-range torque, then a 230/238 .600/.615" 111LSA +2 would work really well. Both cams use the endurance lobes from EPS on the intake and the quieter, softer closing LXL lobes for the exhaust.

the 230/238 .600/.615 sounds like it might be good with stock z06 manifolds

Thanks for chiming in pat! I'll see what kind of grind my builder offers me. The thing is deep inside me, I want a 500rwhp car, but since I'm more on a budget, I aim for 450...to be realistic. I am thinking of getting your 500rwhp recipe grind.

Other Q is; can I run 91octane on 11.5:1 CR?
