Default New Oil Pump?

I'm beginning to gather parts for a cam install on my 01 WS6. Car only has 3600 miles on it. Do you guys think I should change the oil pump with such low mileage? If I do I was thinking of going with the melling 10295 or the Katech ported Ls6 pump. Also I was going to put on an LS2 timing chain. Do i need new sprockets? I don't want to waste money on stuff I don't need but I want to do things right while i'm in there.

I'd replace it. Yes, there's only 3600mi, but you're already in there.

Do you have the money? If you do then yes if you're on a tight budget then you may want to skip them as long as there's nothing wrong with them. Are you going to do lifters with the new cam?

I'm not on a tight budget so money is not a concern. However, I don't want to waste money on something that isn't necessary. I guess I'm wondering if a new melling pump or ported Ls6 pump would be more reliable than stock? Or if I need the extra oil pressure with a new cam?

And No, I have no plans to change the lifters. Just new pushrods and valvesprings with the cam.

2001 has the better designed oil pump when compared to 97-98...if I was you I would just run the stock pump and you crank and cam gear should be fine as well

There was a thread in this forum 2 or 3 weeks ago where a poster posted a graph of the stock oil pump and 2 different Melling pumps and the stock 1's oil pressure dropped like a rock above 6500 and the Mellings kept increasing pressure to 8000rpm's Yes You could run an LS2 chain with the LS1 gears no problem or just go over to RockAuto and get the LS2 timing set for $30

After seeing what my brand new Mexican made ls6 pump looked like inside, I'd much rather have a low mile Canadian made pump from 01.

take your pump off, and just open it up, have a look inside, look at the gears and mating surface finish, (make sure you put the gears back in the same position they came out) if it all looks good smooth and shiny, with no galling or scorch marks, RE-use it you will be fine.
Most of us just change the pump because we had to remove it for cam swap anyway, just played it safe, but my original had 100k when I did it. When I built my stroker I just put a brand new Melling on it,, once again playing it safe.
