Default My LS1 Committed Suicide Last Night! How?

Ok so i have a bone stock 98 Z28 M6 and when i was driving home last night on the freeway i heard a loud knock and i lost oil preasure. Next i saw smoke and heard metal fly off under the car as it died. After i got it home today i looked under it and i have two 1" holes in the block and i found a piston ring stuck under the car. How in the hell does this happen? I think it threw a rod but i dont understand how. All the fluids were good and it was driving fine shortly before. Ill post pictures tommorrow. Im looking for input so i can prevent this from happening in the future. Oh and the car has a 173,000 miles on it and im the third owner. Guess its time to build a 383.

Since your block is hosed anyways, why not build a 402 or 408?

Then in your case I would find a stock LQ4 to swap in. You should be able to find one for around $1k with decent miles.

Stroking an engine and "tight budget" are on opposite ends of the universe.

Good luck and keep us updated with whatever you choose.

May it have been an "assisted suicide"??? 3 owners, beating the crap out of the car, for nearly 200K miles????

My thoughts exactly.
OP might as well make it count if you can afford it.

same thing happened to a friend of mine. he has a Buick GS 455 that had a fresh motor. we just got on the highway, he ran it up to about 4K it knocked for a split second and boom. he thew a rod just like you. till this day we aren't sure why it happened, maybe a bad build/clearances, i don't know. just be greatful that yours had the milage that it did before it let loose. gl with your new build.

All things wear out, including your body.
I would stick to the light-weight block.

As far as assisted suicide its probably true. Im the third owner and i maintain it very well but hey god only knows what its been put through. Ok so since i need a new motor and i want to stroke it because i am a fan of more cubes can someone explain to me what is a good size to go to without destroying the bank completely. This will be a street strip car.

That wasn't suicide. That was old age. In human terms, your engine lived to be about 95 and then died from natural causes.

170k isnt "a ton".... i mean if it was beat on then yes...

We just wrapped up a Procharger, ECS blower cam, ls6 intake manifold, lingenfelter p oil pump, new timing gears and chain, and other supporting mods such as seals and gaskets on my friends 190k mile, 99, c5...

Of course we did a new fuel pump and injectors...but its making 563 rear wheel on 9 psi.

We have a healthy tune on it, and have since added meth injection to help stay conservative.

Alsi, you don't need a stroker to make power.
