valve springs
I just bought a used set of ported heads with 3500 miles on them supposedly and I am wondering if there is a way I can check the condition of the valve springs before installing them on my bottom end? Is the only way to check is to dyno the car with the heads on and look for the power to fall off at higher rpms which would be valve float? I am debating whether I should just put brand new springs in before installing the heads just to be safe. Then again it is a waist to buy new springs if the ones I have only have 3500 miles on them.

What springs are supposed to be on there? Stock? What cam are you running? What lift numbers, etc? It's easier to change the springs when the heads are off the car, and it's better to be safe than sorry

Ditto! I would go with a new set of good springs without hesitations! In my book, the springs are one of the most critical part of modifying an engine. It can become trully a mess in there if you broke one!

Ok the seller has told me that they are rev springs good for .650 lift, but you know that any seller is full of **** if you ask me!! Even if they say the springs have only 3500 miles I will replace the valve springs with brand new double springs just to be sure they will provide reliable performance. That is the only thing that sucks sbout buying used ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are supposed to be rev springs on there with titanium retainers I will be running a TSP 231/237 cam. I think its better safe than sorry. The most cost effective way to replace the springs would be the Patriot Gold Dual Valve spring kit for 290.00. If anybody has a better idea let me know asap.

Good idea bro, if they are the old Rev's they will break too. A friend of mine has a broken set I saw at his house, SCARY!!!!!!!!
Don't know about the Patriots, I have the Comp 921's and they are great. Heard great things about the Crane's too. Your choice though..

Yeah, my last set were Rev springs as well. I bought the heads used and had the spring pressures checked before the install. I didn't put 100 miles on the heads before two of them broke. I believe the tit. retainers saved the day including the time before when I had some springs break. I talked with the original head porter and asked about replacing the springs and he told me he had never had in issue with Revs until that week. He had three sets come back. Most were between 1-2 yrs old. I think you will feel more confident about your heads after you buy the springs. Maybe you can even have new valve guides installed as well. Good luck!
