completely stock 1999 TA, wanting a streetable cam.
So I haven't been in the game for a while.... my last lt1 had a gm847 cam and was awesome for power, but you had to spin it to the moon to make power. I swapped in a hotcam and drive ability was great but the power was of course lacking.
I am looking for a compromise if something exists. My 99 TA is an A4 that I plan to drive daily in the summer to work. Not looking for dyno bragging rights or racing, just wanting something with a little more hp and tq through out the band, fun to drive and sounds good.
I was going to purchase a hotcam but figured in the 8 years or so some decent cams may have come out that would meet my needs.
Most mods I see in the future for this car are headers with cat y pipe and a lid. Wanting cats to keep the exhaust noise down. I drive 30 miles to work.

Trick flow 228/230 is a very nice street cam. You can make 400 wheel with mild bolt-ons and a good tune, and it drives very nice in a stock displacement LS1. The sub .600 lift means it works well with single beehive valve springs which will help you keep your stock trunions, pushrods, timing chain, etc.

Thanks for the advice. Looking at the specs on most of the cams listed it looks like I wouldn't really benefit too much without a 3k stall first as most don't start to make any notice power until 3k rpm range. I have no idea what the stock trq converter is now but completely stock I feel a 3k torque converter would wake this car up. My last car was a manual so if it needed to Rev high I could just dump the clutch if needed.
Ideally I would rather not buy a stall if I don't have to because most name brands are around $800 plus install. However if my money is better spent with a stall instead of a cam I could go that route. Especially if I am going to need a stall later down the road anyhow.
I have been contemplating a 3200-3600 stall as a first supporting mod paired with some longtubes anyhow. I just love the sound of a cam.

I would highly suggest a higher stall, look into Circle-D. They start around $450 for their basic converter which would work for your situation. A 3600 Stall, TSP 228/228-.600/.600 on a 112 LSA, BTR .660 Platinum Valve springs, Straub or BTR Trunnion upgrade, 1-3/4" headers, a nice sounding catback and a tune would be very nice. Probably see a 65+ RWHP gain and would be very streetable with a decent lope, shift point set at 6,600 rpm. That would be the largest cam I would recommend without head work. If you wanted a cheap route for heads, pick up a used stock set of 243 heads, mill them down enough to get 10.8:1 compression and run on 91 octane, would be good for another 20+ RWHP. It would put y0u around 470+ HP at the crank.

I have a similar set up. Works with stock stall but I will be going to a 2800 stall as there will still be a slight push on the brakes. Nothing bad but just want a better launch. I agree a 220 - 224 range cam.

I found this video on youtube... Stock manifolds and a cam in the 220 range. I could handle that for daily driving. Nothing amazing for hp/tq but its not bad and still fairly quiet sounding.
