Default I've got the broken rod blues...

I found out why my block broke. On the driver side it was cracked really bad, I undid a bolt in the side back there and then the chunk fell off... I guess I pushed it a little to hard then bump starting it that day just finished the job.

Those rod bolts on your motor have 12 point heads, what year is your car? Are all newer GM bolts 12 point?Have you owned this car since new?

my stock 99 rod bolts were 12 point heads.

I suspect that they all are. I dont know if Ive seen 6 point heads on rod bolts in several years.

Ya when I broke my motor all up, I had a hole in the block like that, but at the front. All I could get out of my motor that was recognizable besides the windage tray (or what was left of it) was 2 pistons with half a skirt on each and about 1.5 in. of rod on each.

It's that FRAM oil filter that caused the problem. Next time go with AC Delco

Okay I have a rod bolt sittin in front of me here, it says the following on it...A-1 LS1 3093 So it sounds like the samet thing PlumCrazy has. Yesterday when I took the engine all the way apart some of the rods were bent/warped too. As far as the Fram oil filter, yea I usually use AC Delco. In fact my oil pump screen had remense of paper in it, possibly from the filter, as well as a super small spring (I dunno where the hell it came from.) Anyway happy Easter

My '98 had 6 point rod bolt heads...

The bolts in the picture look like the A-1 products bolts that I bought from Katech..

Dude your rods didnt bend from hi rpm, you must have hydrauliced motor with leaky head gasket or something.Previous nitrous runs? A good diagnosis is important to keep a re-occurrence from happening.

^ I'm with him...describe "bump-starting" here...it wouldn't start (in hindsight, potentially mechanically or hydraulicly locked), so you guys pulled it and popped the clutch???? Sorry about your disintegration in any case. Looks like you're the kind of guy who can handle it without a lot of pain though

Yea I know they didnt break from 6k rpm. I am positive the engine was hydro-locked because when I started it, it wouldnt turn over. Bump starting, I live on a hill the starter boss was broken so that was the only way to start it so I could take it to the welding shop to see if they could weld the boss back on, I just never made it that far. The starter boss is also why I have had another engine sitting in here for a long time waiting to go in the car.
