Took the GTO apart today, to install LPE GT2-3 cam. Noticed that the timing chain had quite a bit of slack in it. Most I have ever seen in a timing chain before actually....
Does the LS1 just run more slack than others?
Car only has 3500 miles on it, so I know it isn't wear, and the car ran strong before. Oh well guess I won't worry about it.....

About a 1/2 inch movement is expected.
I am not an expert, but I was told that LS1s are specifically designed to have a slightly slack timing chain, and that too tight is not recommended. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the details surrounding that - I was told by a friend who is a mechanic and has access to all-data software that there is a specific mention of LS1s and aftermarket timing chains being too tight and causing internal damage. It was recommended that 1/4 inch slack be the tightest it should be, sligfhtly slacker is better.
But I would do more research on this matter and not take my word on it. I know it is true, but I don't have the info to back it up. Perhaps someone else does?

How does that one idle, I pretty much wanted a dead stock idle.

94bamf,
Although you started this thread, I still feel like I would be guilty of hijacking if I described my cam in a timing chain thread. I will post a description sometime soon.

Where is everyone getting the ls2 timing chain?
This chain fits the stock ls1, correct? I read on here that you can get one from SDPC (scoggins dickey) for around $28, but doing a search over there came up w/ no results ...a little help here, maybe a part number? (doing a cam swap soon....) Thanks!!!

I have been thinking why the chain inheranted a slack condition, unless its just a design in the cut and or make of the gear, Could it be a way of eliminating excessive harmonics from the crank to the valve train. The old school chains had to be tight for the distributer to hold steady. Hell i dont know i would really like to know why!
