Default So, I guess LS1's run a lot of slack in the timing chain?

Took the GTO apart today, to install LPE GT2-3 cam. Noticed that the timing chain had quite a bit of slack in it. Most I have ever seen in a timing chain before actually....

Does the LS1 just run more slack than others?
Car only has 3500 miles on it, so I know it isn't wear, and the car ran strong before. Oh well guess I won't worry about it.....

Yes the Stock chain has alot of slack. If you dont like it just repalce it with a JWIS chain single or double.

About a 1/2 inch movement is expected.

I am not an expert, but I was told that LS1s are specifically designed to have a slightly slack timing chain, and that too tight is not recommended. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the details surrounding that - I was told by a friend who is a mechanic and has access to all-data software that there is a specific mention of LS1s and aftermarket timing chains being too tight and causing internal damage. It was recommended that 1/4 inch slack be the tightest it should be, sligfhtly slacker is better.

But I would do more research on this matter and not take my word on it. I know it is true, but I don't have the info to back it up. Perhaps someone else does?

I recently replaced my timing chain (at 30k miles) with a new LS2 chain and the amount of slack seemed very much like the original's.

ya approximately 1/2" of play is normal in the timing chain, but excessive slack i would worry about, i would reccomend running a jwiss chain.

I helped a friend install the LS2 chain, it had as much slack as the stock we pulled off. FWIW.

How do you like that cam Gary? That cam was first on my list, but this GT2-3 was such a good price for springs and the cam, plus many guys on ls1gto.com are running the LPE cam with good results.

How does that one idle, I pretty much wanted a dead stock idle.

94bamf,

Although you started this thread, I still feel like I would be guilty of hijacking if I described my cam in a timing chain thread. I will post a description sometime soon.

Question Where is everyone getting the ls2 timing chain?

This chain fits the stock ls1, correct? I read on here that you can get one from SDPC (scoggins dickey) for around $28, but doing a search over there came up w/ no results ...a little help here, maybe a part number? (doing a cam swap soon....) Thanks!!!

Yes, the LS2 timing chain (GM part number 12586482) is a direct (beefier) replacement for the LS1 chain.

I have been thinking why the chain inheranted a slack condition, unless its just a design in the cut and or make of the gear, Could it be a way of eliminating excessive harmonics from the crank to the valve train. The old school chains had to be tight for the distributer to hold steady. Hell i dont know i would really like to know why!
