just installed a rear main seal in mine yesterday. very simple, just be patient with it. flathead screwdriver and a hammer to remove. I used some grease on the lip of the new seal and some on the end of the crank to make sure not to tear the new seal when installing. I used a rubber hammer to tap the seal in, just make sure the lip does not catch and fold back on the crank. I installed my new stall conv. at the same time. two birds at once.

Note, the GM installation instructions specifically say not to lubricate the lip of the seal or the end of the crank as it will interfere with the seating and sealing of the seal. They recommend a special Kent Moore tool. However, a lot of folks have done it without the tool. I'm wondering if it would work to use something like a butter knife from the back side to help the seal lips over the end of the crankshaft. Some people on the forum have made a cone shape with a slight taper to help the seal expand over the crank.

I don't think so. It makes it 20 times easier with the rear cover off and the gasket is reusable. If your around an O'Reillys, I think its a part number- 10085 or something like that from BCA bearings. If they don't see it, tell them to call springfield. (I work for O'Reilly auto parts if you haven't noticed) They are around 12.95 normal price.

Same as front cover. Don't lube the seal, I guess it's bad for it or something. I always use RTV around the seal when installing it into the cover so oil can get between the cover and the seal. If you are gentle and patient, you don't need a tool to install the seal.
