How hard do you have to pull before the rod bolt ferrules come out? My motor has been apart before and the mechanic could have taken them out then but im not sure. I removed one rod bolt at a time and havent seen a single ferrule. I dont know what they look like, but nothing is pulling out.

leave the bolt threaded in still a little bit and give it a good tug...should come out.

When I changed rod bolts in my truck 6.0L they rod bolts would not come out without the collar coming with it. They wouldn't slip over the threads.

I just swapped out the bolts on my 99 formula with some Katech bolts, and I saw no ferrules?? motor is still on stand should I double check? what years are they in???

Ferrels are in 99+ motors but you might have an early 99 so yours might not have them. If the stock bolt had a shoulder on it then you wouldn't have a ferrel. If it didn't then I'd be looking for the ferrels.

I am doing the same thing in my 99 Camaro SS, I have the first one out and no Ferrules, Here are some pics of my bolts.

when I pulled the rod bolts out of my rods I saw no ferrules. Mine is a 2000 block....I think...anyway to know what year a block is from for sure? It has an open oil valley in the front of the motor like 99+ blocks should have...

I do remember the bolt getting loose and then tight again when I was backing out the bolts out of the rods... Maybe that was them....

anyways im putting arp bolts back in so I need to take the ferrules out right?

Yeah, those are just like the 97-98 bolts. You probiably have a early 99 car and got basically a 98 bottomend with 99 heads. I'm curious what is your block casting number if you can see it. I know some of the thin walled sleeve blocks were carried into 99 as well. It's possible that the combination of thin wall sleeve and non ferreled bolts would be the norm.

My bolts look identical to those.....so because of the shoulder, there would be no ferrules, correct? I double checked and saw nothing.....

In the pics, I see no "shoulder". Are you calling the flange on the head the shoulder?

The bolts in the the pics of post #6 show that the threaded area of the bolt has a step in it, whereas the picture in post #3 has no step, just the ferrule on there.
