Default What does a failing oil pump sound like?

Has anyone heard what a failing oil pump sounds like? I've got a high pitched whine coming from the front of the motor. The best way I can describe it is it sounds like a high pressure air leak. Any thoughts?

I would imagine that it also would manifest itself with a noticeable drop in oil pressure...........sure it's not the water pump, maybe the bearings in the tensioner????...... Just thinking about what possibly could cause that symptom....

I only wish that is was the water pump or a pulley. I'm pretty sure that it's something internal because, I ran the car in the garage without any of the belts and the noise didn't go away.

It doesn't really sound like anything unless you hear knocking, you oil pressure will be low, mine was at 18psi after the pump failure, and would sometimes drop lower than that as the rod bearing that had spun got worse.

I had one fail and there were no sounds associated with it--just no oil pressure.

Thats what I would suspect would happen. If you hear a knocking noise, the damage has already been done.

The sucking noise is air moving through the system while the car is running. The funny thing it set no SES light at all just ran a little crappy.

Thanks for the input everyone, but there's no knocking noise or drop in oil pressure. Guess I'll have to be on the lookout and keep my ears open.
