Default Oil Pressure

I am just trying to figue out what the normal oil pressure reading should be for a 98 TA. Mine usually reads like 1/4 of the guage (20 Maybe?) and I am not sure if that is to low. Thanks

Mine usually runs about 40 at idle and 60+ on the gas.

oh boy, so my pump or some part of the system could be bad if I only get like 20 ideling and really no gain when on throttle?

I wouldn't worry about the 20 at idle as much as I would the pressure not going up with the RPM.

You need 10 psi per thousand rpm. So 20 psi is ok at idle, but you need at least 60 psi for 6k. You may have a pump going out, bad bearing, or bad oring if your pressure doesn't climb.

I heard the 98's had oil pump problems.

you'll have some ppl on here tell you that if yours has less than 40 at idle, then your motor is junk and the whole thing needs to be thrown away and you might as well invest in another motor. Mine, with cam and ported ls6 oil pump is finecky... sometimes it'll be 35 at idle, other times, 25. Never below 25-30 though... and the thing runs darn good. Not a single problem.. So, don't listen to those no-sayers...

Like was said above, as long as you're getting more pressure as you increase RPMs, you should be okay

I think the oils sender on the '98s could be weird. I have a 98 TA and broke the sensor putting on the intake. Mine had two prongs and the new one only had one. I threw it on anyway to see if it worked and it actually seems to read a lot more accurately now. It never moved much with RPMs before but does now. Just something I noticed. I could just be talking out my A$$ too.

^^^ You might be right. My oil pressure increases some with RPM but not to 60-65 psi at WOT like others have reported. 50-55 psi cold idle and 35-40 psi hot idle. Same behavior after I installed an LS6 oil pump during cam swap, ie some increase in oil pressure at higher rpm but not much. BTW, did you purchase the new oil sender unit at a dealership? Part number?

I agree.
I have a forged lower end it has always hot idled at 20-25 lbs 900 RPM and goes up to 65lbs at around 6000 rpms.
I use M1 15W50 never a problem even after 20,000 miles.

Alright, well thanks for all the good information guys, I will have to investigate it some more. Maybe an excuse to go ahead with a cam if I need a oil pump replaced anyways
