Default Contributing factors to LS1 oil usage

What is it that causes LS1's to be such oil feinds? I have heard the PCV valve is horrible on these cars. I have also heard things such as ring flutter, loose piston/bore clearances. What is the issue in most cases where cars chug 2qts in 3K miles? How commin is usage that bad using a PROPER oil(0 or 5-40)? Sorry for all the dang technical questions as of late but I am planning on buying something here pretty soon (deal on property seems to be going well) and if I am going to drop the $$, I want the facts. Is it poor ring seal or other issues, or PCV or is there a legitimate piston/bore/ring flutter problem. The car I plan on would be 01-02 M6 if it helps. Thanks in advance!

My '00 WS6 has 27k on it and very really does it puff on start up. Doesn't appear to burn oil. Good luck.

mine used to burn oil fast on m1, a brand switch to rp was all that was needed for my car, the pvc seems to be a big contributor to the oil usage. my intake had oily film on it, so the ls1 pvc isnt the best, i just bought a new pvc valve (they also sell the whole ls6 valley cover and pvc system 100+$ dont remeber exact price) but mine no longer has issues, so the soposedly improved 6$ valve was enough for me.

Was it the RP or the new valve that stopped the usage?

just change your pcv valve every 2-3 oil changes and it wont really be a problem. and yes running good oil like rp or german castrol will help.

I run RP and have no problems. Take the suggestions from this thread, and you should be ok.

Thanks, Still looking for feedback and all, I am planning to purchase a sports car in the next 6 months and the LS1 is getting top nod right now. Oil consumption is the only thing that is worrying me. My 5.0 sucks 2-2.5 qts in 3K miles and its a new motor with excellent compression test numbers and all that jazz, but it still drives me NUTS!!! I DO NOT!!!! WANT TO DO THIS AGAIN!!!!

I have heard the SHell full synthetic 0 or 5-40 is a good oil too. I know I have used 15-40 SHell in a lot of stuff and it works great. The best success story I have with it is the LT1 TA I woulght a few years ago with 150K miles on it. Owner ran 20-50 GTX. The 15-40 rotella cleaned so much **** out that the filter plopped black pudding out of it during every oil change I did for 2-3 changes (I did it at 3-400 mile intervals to clean her out). Car never used a dribble until I sold it at 170K miles and then it went to a federal impound b/c of the new owners...ermm...life choices.

Edit: when it comes to worrying over mechanical flaws im like a ferret on crack with OCD.

Just convert to the ls6 pvc set up. I was using a quart between changes. Ls6 conversion cleared up and using Valoline 5w30 since I bought it, hell use that brand in all past vehicles.

LS6 pcv and a good oil like GC or amsoil should cover any type of light consumption problems.

Amsoil 5w40 here, no noticeable consumption. Stock PCV. As a matter of fact, i'll try to remember to check it tomorrow to be sure. The oil has ~2.8k miles on it.

Mine has never consumed any measureable amount since new. When I had the motor apart swapping heads I upgraded to the LS6 PCV setup since I was in there. Go for an 2002 model, that's your best chance of a non oil burner. 2001's seem to burn oil the worst due to the rings GM used that year.

What rings did they use different that year?

mostly PCV design. After getting an ECS oil breather cap, I now lose only 1/2 qt between oil changes.

My bone stock 98 WS6 had 60,000 miles on it before I did my modding (sig). When I would do 3,000 mile oil changes I would get 5 quarts out of it. Meaning it burned 1/2 quart in 3,000 miles. And some of that 1/2 quart is oil that can't come out during the change, so I don't think LS1's burn any oil. Many other friends with stock LS1's had the same burn between changes. Unless they have a problem.
