Default TR224 CAM.....can I use 7.425" Push Rods?

I have had the TR224 CAM and TR 7.4" pushrods installed since last April and the ticking noise is driving me nuts when headers are on the car! It's not an exhaust leak or check valve flutter.........I tried blockoff plates and even swapped on a different brand of Header and it didn't make a difference. I then yanked the heads and popped in some Comp Cam's 850 lifters thinking maybe one of the stockers was on the way out........didn't fix a thang. Finally, putting the stock manifolds back on made it quite down.......but manifolds suck! Question. Would 7.425" pushrods quite down the gremlins tap dancing under my hood without having an adverse affect on performance. Also, was thinking of changing the Comp 918 springs out for a set of Patriot Gold Dual springs........not that that would affect my first problem........I have 13K on the cam/springs and if I have to pull them to check them I'd just as soon replace them. I have broken spring phobia, so I was thinking the Dual Srpings might be a safer bet for a coward like me? Any reason not to put the dual springs on?

Thanks,
Mike

Check to make sure your rockers studs are tight. I would not use the 7.425 push rods. Dual springs should make the ticking louder.

Rocker studs are torqued to spec........that is one of the 1st things I checked. I also checked the O-ring on the oil pump pickup when I put the new lifters and LS2 timing chain in. Rockers appear fine.....no cracks and not missing any needle bearings. I talked to Dave at Thunder Racing and he agrees with what your saying.........stick with the 7.4 p-rods and 918 springs. Good to hear the same advice repeated...........Thanks for your response!

7.425 will probably place too much preload on the lifter, just keep the 7.4's

i run dual springs on everything, they are a excellent choice. as far as ticking noise, it is so common in these motors once you put an aftermarket cam shaft in them. 90% of thse cams a ground with very fast seat to seat timing, to get the engine to build as much vaccum as possible at idle.

Would there be any performance difference between the 918s and Patriot Gold dual springs? How about spring life between the two?

I have heard of people using the 7.425 with success. Don't forget that the base circle of the 224 cam is smaller than stock, so the slightly longer push rod is making up for it.

I personally would run the kit that Thunder makes for it.

As for valve train noise, its common dont worry. As long as nothing is fragged then your mint.

You could buy the pushrod length checker from thunder for $20 to see what the correct length would be instead of guessing. If pushrod length is your problem it would have saved you a ton of work.

7.425 pushrods here. I have a 228 cam and when I measured the base circle between the two cams i really need a 7.440 so I went with the 7.425 rather than the 7.450.

Exactly. I'm running the 7.425's, and my valvetrain is quiet as can be. I forgot the exact measurement, but the difference between the ASA cam and stock meant I needed a 7.420. I figured that I should run a 7.425, but still got some advice from Predator, which was very helpful. Fwiw, my tuner agreed that the 7.425's were a good choice. Having said all of that though, I know a lot of guys using 7.4's with no problems.
