Need help, rearend question
Are alright guys. I am getting ready to do a head/cam, lifters, timing chain, oil pump, and a tranny refurb. It would be nice to get a 12" or a 9" rearend but let's face it, just like you guys I'm not rich and can't afford a new rearend just yet with everything else that I'm buying. At least not for several months or possibly a year. What I want to know is whether or not I should at the least purchase a 3.73 or 4.10 gear to replace the stock gears but keep the stock rearend assembly. If I do the gears (or even later when I can get a different rearend, if it's actually necessary) which gear would work best? My car is a daily driver. Half my drive is on side streets and the other half is on the highway, 60 miles round trip. Thanks in advance for your hep or suggestions.

Wrong forum!!!!!..........sorry, but i had to point that out.
Anyway, going with a bigger gear ratio is going to make your stock 10-bolt even weaker. But many people(myself included) still put gears in the stock rear. We all know its going to go soon or a later, but want something fun in the meantime. The two most popular gear ratios are 3.73s for auto's, and 4.10s for M6's. Both will be fine for a DD. Some poeple dont like all the shifting that comes with 4.10s, but honestly i dont mind it at all-you get used to it real quick.
Depending on what size your cam is, you might want a little more gear. Some cams bog in low RPMS and will drive and perform better with a higher gear ratio. BTW what cam ARE you getting?

I wouldn't spend one more cent on my 10 bolt than I had to before I traded out. 10 bolt/9 inch. Very strong. 10 bolt is lucky to hold.... like mine has been lucky. I will buy over her later....

It appears that those of you who have replied are still driving with the stock rearend. How long have you guys been driving with the stock rearend with your perfomrance modifications?

I have never had a problem with my 10bolt. I have gone to the track on drag radials launched my car at 4500rpms still didn't break. I have beat on my 10bolt and still was going strong. I have stock gears with the ms3 cam. I'm still gonna have my 10bolt when my 408 goes in.
