Default Anybody ported the oil pan passages?

I know a lot guys port the oil pump, or buy a ported one. However, I have not heard of anybody porting the oil passages in the oil pan. I was looking at mine and thought the smoothing out the rough edges on the passages going into and out of the filter might be a good idea. Any thoughts on this?

I know this is an old thread. But I was cleaning up the pan for my build and noticed the restrictive port that feeds the filter thru the pan rail. I see people porting the oil pump inlet & outlet all the time but the pan passage looks more restrictive than anything in the pump. I used a die grinder to open up the port but I was curious to know if anyone else has run into this.

Im just wondering if you hog them out too much if that becomes a stress point for a crack or fracture to develop. Not to scare you or anything. Lets see a picture if you havent buttoned it up yet. That would probably help me figure out what you changed.

Damn, never thought of this. I have a spare pan, I could probably tackle tonight or tomorrow.

I didn't take any 'before' pics but I'll post one of the ported pan tonight.

Here are a couple pics. I ported the port from the pump (forward on the pan) that fills the outside of the filter. I wish I would have taken a pic prior to show how restrictive it was. Looking at the pic I think I could do a little more work opening and radiusing the port from the bottom.

Let us know how it works out, lower or higher pressure than before.

HIltsy, let us know how it works out. I've been wanting to experiment with some of this stuff, but preferred to do it on my own car rather than a customers car. Unfortunately I don't own an LSX powered vehicle right now so my experimentation has been put on hold.

Post oil pressure results when you can.

Oil pressure should raise slightly if anything since the sender is after the restriction you cut out. I bought a new melling high volume high pressure pump and may do this if I can get the pan out with the engine in the car.

I'll post my numbers in a couple months but I changed so many other things (bearings, ported / shimmed pump) I don't know if they'll mean much. It should help some. Like I said before - that port looks more restrictive than the pump outlet.

I've been doing this for 8 years on the one with poor machining - Some are worse than others. Don't know of any oil pressure differences from fixing that area, almost all that I've done were engine replacements/buildups.

Pics are also in my LS Engine book.
