What weight/grade motor oil to use for 1st oil change after cam install
Hey guys...I'am right at about 300 miles after my cam install and was told I should change the oil
What is your reccomendation? I was thinking Royal purple or amsoil 5 or 10W30
What about 5 or 10W40?
What would my motor like best...I would think something a little thicker.
The car is a 1998. 80K miles, Torquer 3 cam with full bolt-ons
Also I live in NJ (I know if the car see's alot of hot or cold temps this matters. NJ goes both ways)
I am also not sure if the previous owner used synthetic or not....should I start to use now?
Let me know if you need any other info....Thanks!

The first number in the formula 5w30, or 10w30, is the 'winter' weight, or viscosity. This number is only important when talking about temperatures under about 34 degrees F. Like right now in Jersey. The second number is your regular viscosity.
All that being said, I would run a 5w whatever. I personally dont run anything thicker than 30 in anything less than higher HP, or FI, or cars that are being tracked.

What about the German castrol 0w30..I've read some good things about it.
My main concern here is that I want to put in the right oil for this cam...Would this work well?

If you can get the german 0w30 I would try it. My car likes it. Basic rule of thumb is in cold weather go with the lowest acceptable 1st # as it will circulate through the motor quicker and reduce start up wear. I ran it all summer here but for some reason it is hard to get and am running Penz Plat 5w30 now. Also a good oil. If it leaks with synth try a synth convential blend.

factory our cars and vettes run a 5w 30 mobil one . i have always used the mobil one but royal purple is some good stuff . of course oil has been debated as everyone has a favorite and opinion (got to love america) .
since you are running an aftermarket cam it would make sense to bump up the oil to justify the means .

It's not about the break in, it's about all the gold shavings from your cam bearings on installation and your new cam settling in, your oil looks like a gold mine when you change out a camshaft, cut open the filter and check it out.
