Default 220/220 114 cam question

I talked to pat at thunder racing and he suggests that I run their 220/220 114 lsa cam. I searched and theres not many guys running this cam, atleast I think.

Looking on youtube I found a camaro with the exact cam, idling. It sounds good, says it's making 378 rwhp. Doesn't list mods. Anyone know what kind of power with my mods I'd make? and courious how it'll effect my gas mileage. ( Just for bragging rights)

I'm going with this cam due to the fact it'll idle pretty well atleast I'm told. My dad doesn't want me touching my car for some reason. But he doesn't know about the LT's, UD pully or springs I've installed. haha Yeah it sounds bad, but it is my car....just he had to co-sign due to the fact I was 20 when I bought it 2 yrs ago. And he doesn't want it modded.

Any comments on this cam are welcomed.

The TR220 is a nice street cam. I originally had this cam and made 400 rwhp and 380 rwtq with bolt-ons and AFR heads. It will not put up high peak numbers that everyone seems to get all excited about but does produce decent gains in the useable RPM range that you see while driving around town (ie. low to mid rpm range).

What cam you decide to go with should depend on your plans for the car. If you want to track the car majority of the time I would recommend a larger cam since you will be living in the upper RPMs. If your car primarily sees the street and you want "close to stock" driveability (but with added power) you are on the right path with this cam, although I would go with the TR224.

Good luck with your decision.

if you put this cam in your car, your dad WILL notice something different

even the smaller GM hotcam has some noticeable lope to it...

My 224R cam (224/224 .581 114) is great for a DD car... I probably wouldn't go any bigger than it though if your trying to stay low key... the smaller 220 your looking at though is gonna be even more streetable and less noticeable than mine...

either way, it'll be a good mod for you and you'll like it. Just remember TUNE IS KEY

The 220 will give you good torque down low, easy to tune, good driveability. I pulled 365 with my TR220 but that was with LS1 intake and headers that don't flow as well as yours, so 375 should be a reasonable expectation.

Yeah my car is mostly street. I brought it to the track once last yr and ran is 1 time. I put maybe 2,000 miles on it in the summer, just going for rides.

I'd just like more power everywhere. I like the stock powerband, and from what I'm told this cam will give me the stock like power. On texas speeds site they show the 220/220 cam, with a 112, 114-116 LSA. 114 is like standard, and the 116 is the "sleeper" idle obviously. I know this would affect the mid range power, but how much? Would I be able to tell the difference in the 114 vs 116?

So a 224 woud make it idle worse?

i wouldn't think of it as worse... just more noticeable

My 224 on a 114 is not at all stock sounding... when you hear the car, you know it means business

It's not crazy choppy or anything... but it is noticeable over a stock, but in a good way

if I could do it all over again i'd stay with my 224, or perhaps even a 228... but wouldn't really be interested in anything larger than that for my DD that I enjoy just cruising around in... it's not a track car, but I like to know it's got the power when I need it...

you sound like a 220 to a 224 would make you happy... either one

here's a 218/218 cam... so a little smaller than the 220 your looking at

http://www.ls1sounds.com/Borla/borla...14cam_00SS.mov

a 222 on a 114 cam

http://www.ls1sounds.com/bassani/Bas...clips_02SS.mp3

the exact cam i have... 224/224 .581 114

http://www.ls1sounds.com/Borla/borla...4Rcam_idle.wmv

here's a good clip of a 224/228... so this is a tad bigger than mine...

lope is relative to overlap. 220/220 114LSA is -8* overlap so stealthy.
Yes it is a good cam but if you talked to Pat G, I would think that this is what he recommmends
218/220 .604/.581 114+2 LSA

it will come with a 41.x to 42 IVC and ~(-8*) overlap,
Nice cam for a good ~30>35 rwhp increase if installed properly

It's an MTI C1 Cam... however, I don't see it on their website anymore...

http://www.motorsporttech.com/fbody_engine01.asp

or the Speed Inc. "SI1" cam... but they no longer make it either apparently

This may help. The last thread is a link to the same car with heads added.

Good luck.

See my sig. It's a small cam and I love it. Don't let people tell you that small cams are no good. That said, if I didn't have smog, I'd go bigger lol...

Plenty of blokes running the TR220 over here - for VERY good results. It is a good cam and performs better than the specs initially suggest.

Cheers,

Macca
