Default Spun 6800

So i was driving, floored first, shifted at 5500 in to second, except when i let off the gas, the revs keep climbing, it bounces off the top, well in to the 6800 range. the gas pedal wasnt stuck or anything, so i was baffled and had a few seconds to make a decision, i grabbed the key and shut the car off while driving, nobody was in front of me so it was okay. anyways, i turned it back on quickly and everything was back to normal.

my question, what the hell? did i do any damage to my internals? Drives the same....

and why would this happen??

wow thats really strange. you said the gas pedal wasnt stuck or anything right? it should have hit the rev limiter well before reaching those rpm's.

Clean your throttle blade ASAP, you may not have felt the pedal itself get stuck but your throttle blade could have gotten stuck open.

+3, and check the throttle cable while you are at it. You shouldn't have damaged anything if you only briefly hit those rpm ranges.

Yea, our motors CAN do 6500 safely, daily. I'm curious as to why it didn't hit the rev limiter as well. If you have it set to something else, then there must be some justification for it being higher, but if you haven't... Well stock is 5850.

I am surprised it never hit the limiter, maybe your tach is way off. I know the stock tachs are not correct typicly.

Well his sig says he has a programmable chip, so that's probably why he didn't hit the rev limiter. To the OP, I would strongly suggest that you adjust your rev limiter to a safer level.

what was the temp outside when this happened? sometimes throttles can stick when its mad cold out. another Q did you get it tuned or was it a previous owner? and did the valves float at all?

happen to me once , there was something under that cover thingy were you rev the car from under the hood. i guess its what people are calling the blade, it was very scary

No, that's not the blades, I think it's called the throttle linkage or something other than that. When others said the blades got stuck, they mean the actual TB blades that open to let air in. When they get dirty, they can stick.

hey guys, thanks for all the input. where are the throttle blades? (i'm new to LT1s) Do you mean the two "vents" on the throttle body that open and close? How do i clean those? (i have an aftermarket TB, by the way). It was pretty scary, yes. I do have non-stock software (modified prom) so that could have something to do with the rev limiter, but i dont know... its from the previous owner. how do i go about adjusting the rev limiter?

Yes, the "vent" you are referring to are the blades. You can clean it with throttle body/carburetor cleaner (name is pretty straight forward lol). You rev limiter was changed by the previous owner, you can get it adjusted by any one with LT1 editing software.

yes the 2 vents in the trottle body some good carb cleaner will do but do not have the motor running. if this becomes an on going issue your tach might have a bad pickup sensor in it(had a friend who had the same thing but it started reading 500-1000rpm`s to high at times) you`ll need to replace or get an aftermarket on factory tachs don`t read properly.

Well, i have a 93' LT1 which if i remember correctly can not be adjusted and need a new prom.

so... just get some TB/carb cleaner and spray it on there? or do i have to remove the TB? or..?

Well, the tach isnt bad because i could head the engine revving way up, so the tach was definitely right. lol

i mean it would be one thing if it was reading 6800 and the engine wasnt revving, but it was.

I meant to say LT1 editing software. I am not familiar with tuning restrictions on '93s. If you have a chip that changes the tune, they you need to get it adjusted/replaced.

Yes, just spray it on there and clean everything up nice and shinny.

Something similar happened to me the other night. It's actually the 2nd time that this has happened. Ran into a Mustang GT, had the throttle get stuck wide open to the floor. I couldn't move the gas pedal at all. I shifted a few times before I realized it was stuck wide open. was like a 6800RPM power shift!!. I put the car in neutral for a half second and just saw that needle bouncing off the rev limiter. I swear I saw 7k hit like 5-6 times. I just cut the key off and coasted to the shoulder. Popped the hood and found my TB blade stuck under my WOT switch. The first time it happened months ago it got stuck under my bellow clamp. My car still drives fine.. At first it seemed the clutch was too hot but now it's all good.

The guy was cool enough to stop and reverse all the way to me to check if everything was ok. I fixed my TB and turned the car on and got on it some more

Nice, yeah thats almost exactly the story that happened to me, except i wasnt racing anyone, just having some fun by myself.

so do i have to remove the TB? or just spray that stuff in there and clean it out with a cloth?

dont need to rmove the tb just spray it real good and wipe out all the junk
