Default Bore increase

I'm having my block bored to 355, and I'm looking into some forged pistons. I'm on a budget, so I'm hoping someone knows a good deal. I'd like to pay around $300, although I know $400 is probably more realistic.

These Speed Pro pistons are about as inexpensive as you are going to get at $289 through Summit

These Keith Black ones would be next in line at $329

Too bad both have a thick ringpack that will be more parasitic and cause more bore wear than stock.

Yeah you gave him exactly what he asked for. I just tried to say he was not taking a step forward as I am sure he would like too.

I am so tired of seeing all these slow "built" motor cars and this is one of the mistakes that leads too it.

As I have said before, it is not cheap to improve on what the factory gave us.

Why am I being told they're as good or better than stock then?

Forged piston> hypereucraptic all day long , no two ways about it. The guys on a budget there will be some compromises made.

Since when? The factory LT1 is decent, nothing exotic. Go spray a stock LT1 with a 150 shot. You'll get a summer out of it. Go install a 4-5psi blower on one, you'll get a summer out of it. I know of several cast crank 383's with h-beams and forged pistons that don't break the bank, and can handle some serious boost or juice. And they were relatively cheap. $1000-$1100 for the internals.

I've seen several 150 shot/stock LT1's last. As long as it is set up right, with timing and fuel, it will last a while.

That is pushing the envelope though. Kinda like running 11's with a 10-bolt, some will last some won't.

I agree with slp. A friend of mine has been running a 150-shot on a stock engine entirely for 3 years now with no problems. Compression is still strong and within 12psi across the board.

The people who don't last are the ones who don't use a window switch & WOT swich, don't have an upgraded pump or injectors, run a big shot without pulling timing or running high octane fuel.
N2O can be safe, you just have to have your setup made to accommodate it.

Agreed, many don't take the proper steps to setup a nitrous kit safely, then it goes boom and they tell you it was the motors fault.

With the budget forged pistons you are taking a step back and a step forward at the same time.

Step back - thicker rings which could cause more wear and will have more drag than the thin metric stock rings. Both wear and power loss would be minimal IMO.

Step forward - stronger pistons that will stand up to more nitrous

You would probably be better off to run a quality set of hypereutectic pistons with the metric rings if you don't plan to use a whole lot of nitrous. Good hyper pistons will take some abuse. The stock ones themselves are pretty good.

Do any of you guys have any first-hand evidence of this "thicker ring pack wear" that "could" occur or is it just internet banter?

Oh, and as for nitrous I should have just said a 200 shot in my first post. The point I was trying to make is that LT1's are a decent motor, nothing exotic, nothing substantial, nothing really out of the ordinary, just a solid 350 sbc with a few quirks. Yes they can be rebuilt for pretty cheap unlike what the taxi driver says.

That's what I'm saying. Where did you hear all this? If you read it on-line without experiencing it first hand, I'm going to have to say there's nothing wrong with those SPs...

It's true but it is so minimal that it doesn't matter IMO. Not the most top of the line ideal way to go, but it will work just fine.
