Default Scared to go from Yank SS to the PT

Basically, I have a Yank SS3600 and I love it. Its very tight and performs great. My trans just went so I want to put something in there that matches my setup better. I called Yank and they suggested the PT4000 or SS4000. The PT fits my bill performance wise because killer ET's and roll racing are both important to me. The car is NA and will stay NA so the PT is better for me than the SS. Now comes my concern....the car is not my DD but I drive it alot in summer and hence I dont want the thing to be annoying to drive. I can handle more looseness than my SS3600 but w/ dumped TD's I dont want to have to rev this thing super high to just get moving. I can tolerate a decent amount but I'm afraid the PT around town will kill my enjoyment of the car like I have with the SS3600?

BTW: Its an street/strip LT1 w/ just under 400rwhp and 6400rpm shiftpoints. Torque peak is ~4000rpm and the car has 3.73 gears. My current shift extension with the SS3600 = 4900rpm which is less than optimal for my particular setup.

I would just call Yank and ask them what they suggest. They don't give any info on these boards. Other than,"Give us a call".

I did. I got a couple suggestions and I know the PT4000 is what I want performance wise but I'm looking for PT owners to chime in with the street manners of their PT4000 particularly.

Had the pt4000 I hated it on the street. I now have a baby stall.... Midwest 3400 and can now drive my car and enjoy it. If performance is all you want go for the pt it hit like a son of a ^$#*@ and would break my tires loose all the time even at half throttle, but at a stop light I always had to get into the peddle more then I needed to. I also have 400 or so rwhp.

Go with the PT. Perfect for NA. Invest in some sticky tires because it hits like you got rearended by a Mack truck. I had 275/40/17 MTs and they were useless. It layed 50 feet of rubber from a 25 hit on just motor. I had a PT4000, but switched to a 3 disc when the PT couldn't handle the spray. My car dynoed 435/550 (NA). It wasn't bad at all on the street in normal driving. My car would move @ 1500 and going up my rather steep driveway took less than 2k.

man sry to hear about your trans,
as a owner of a ss4000 i can say it is alittle loose and for city driving it can be alittle annoying with the reving, but it rips when you get on it.
I am not sure when you plan to do the trans/stall, i have my car apart right now but your more then welcome to test it out too see if it what your looking for,I should have it together by early spring.

Thanks man, I may take you up on that offer. I might be pulling the trans in a couple weeks when I'm home for spring break and send my stall to Yank to have restalled to the PT4000. If I dont get around to it I'll check your car out later when I'm home for the summer. I just got off the phone with Yank and they said the PT would be just a little more loose than the SS3600 I currently have. Chances are I will go with the PT series instead of the SS but I change my mind weekly so we will see.

We will have to hit up Maple Grove or Atco sometime this summer. I have a buddy local that also has an LE heads/cam car thats dying to get to the track.

all you guys are nuts the SS is the way to go it is a very tight converter...i have had both a ss3600 and now a ss4000...it is really only just a little bit more loose on the street, but is a whole new animal at the track...can we all say 1.38 60ft cam only...

if i were you i would stick with the SS line...i also know what a PT can do my dad has a pt4400...lets just say he is tying circle D's new 9" converter cause the PT was a little too loose on the top end around 13%...the circle d is supposed to be around 8-9%...

again i love my ss4000 and couldnt be happier

Agreed with above. I ran a PT4000 previous to my 5C and it was very loose on the street. Something to consider for a street driven car with stock gears.

What up Stealth...I talked to Dave over at Yank about a week ago and by telling him my set up (which is about the same as yours) I would lean towards the SS4000. Tough choice man. I think the PT will be a little too loose for ya. Decisions decisions...

Are you sure its the trans slipping and not traction?
Such low miles on the trans, but i guess its possibe.
I had the same thing happen here the car was too loud to hear the tires spinning, also since temps are cold around here, makes it even worse

I went from a ss3600 to a pt4000 and i didn't think the looseness was all that much different. Mine has a 2.2str while the ss3600 had a 2.5str. If i recall correctly the str will directly relate to how loose a converter feels. a ss4000 has a 2.6str if i recall so it should feel the loosest.

I ran the SS4000 and swapped to the PT4400 when my trans took a dump. The PT4400 is only slightly looser than the SS4000....a few hundred RPM's max. I run it with 3.23's and it's not bad at all. There is some looseness, but it's very bearable for daily driving. I can honestly tell you that the PT outperformed the SS in every respect on my setup, especially topend and roll races. It's absolutely amazing and insane from a roll. With street tires, 50 MPH hits are a fight for traction, and anything less than 40 is a joke.

It works great at the track too. I'm full weight, Bilstein suspension, and I cut 1.58 while attempting to save my 10-bolt. What I mean is that I didn't launch as hard as I'd like, but hard enough to get the job done and leave me feeling somewhat at ease about that weak 7.5". I know there's better short times out there, but I've done nothing for my suspension. My car is lowered 1" and I was running the stock 17's up front and 16" TA wheels with Hoosiers out back. I'd never go back to an SS series unless I decided to spray which won't be an option for a long time. This converter is my favorite mod hands down. Hope this gives you some insight!

ss4000, it works great NA, and will already be there if you decide to add more power.

how did the two converters compare? i have a gut feeling more people would like the pt series better if they match it with a proper setup. yank told me the pt 4000 was too much for my car unless i really raised my shift points (currently set at 6200). i ended up getting a pt 3800 2.0 str. i have very very little time on it and i have never owned another converter so i will not tell you what is best. they told me the ss4000 was definatly a better match for my car than the pt4000. they said with my 6200 shift points the pt would have too much slip up top (because of having shift points that were too low). however, they did say the pt were better stalls for roll racing for sure if it was matched to the proper setup. i wanted a pt series because i do roll racing. i will even be raising my shift points to 6400 to hopefully get better use out of my stall. my car is a full bolt on car with heads and a tr224 cam, by the way. i was really hitting them with questions because i wanted a pt stall for the roll. they came out and told me that the pt 4000 wants 6800 shift points and don't even consider the pt4400 unless you were shifting well over 7000 rpms or it will be slowing you down on the top end. was the pt 3800 the best choice for me? i have no idea honestly. i went with it because they said the pt4000 was simply too much unless i raised the shift points, as i already mentioned. as far as driving the car, it is fairly loose. i am between 1500 and 2500 cruising around. i can stay around 2000 rpms if i want though. everyone accelerates differently when they are just cruising it is hard to say in words how tight/loose it really is. it doesn't bother me at all because this isn't my daily driver. i have a hard time taking a lot of peoples advice. everyone will have their own opinion, some i will agree with and some i won't. however, 90% of the people will tell you the best stall is the one they have. i wouldn't hesitate calling yank another time or two until you get everything you want to know. they are the ones that make the stalls. then again, i don't know how much real life driving they have on all of their stalls, especially with the variety of motor combinations possible. good luck

by the way, my car is a ls1 with 3.23's. i realize you have a LT1 so your car may respond differently than the LS1's.

I have 3.73's. I called Dave at Yank today and he said it wouldnt be too much looser than my SS3600.

Yea I'm sure, the one day it slipped a little and I thought nothing of it. Then my dad had it out a couple weeks ago and said it was slipping really bad and so bad that the car wouldnt want to really go anywhere. Yeah the miles kinda suck but I guess the stall along with the power finally got to it. My 2nd 4L60E in 2 years, my other one went at 70k

Thats good to know since thats pretty much what Dave at Yank said when I called him today. Do you like your PT4000 better overall than your old SS3600?

when a PT4000 runs a better 60ft than 1.38 cam only with a 3275 car...then maybe i will agree that the pt is a better converter...i mean do you guys really think my car will be even faster with a PT...the times i have now are insane...

i mean 99hawk is running 1.58 with a pt4400 400rpm bigger stall...yeah i know he is full weight so that almost washes my weight reduction...just something to think about...

i think the only route to go is ss4000 or a circle d top of the line for around 1k...

the choice it up to you but is you want the converter that will make your car the fastest the SS is a no brainer over the PT IMO...unless someone has times of a PT 4000 that are close to mine...i havent seen any...
