Default Timing chain question

As I have mentioned many times before, I am camming my 01 T/A WS6. Well today I started to do my valvesprings and noticed that my timing chain seems kinda loose. Is this normal on an LS1? I know my friend said when he rebuilt his trucks motor he remembers his stock chain being loose a bit. However it just doesn't seem right for it to have soo much play in it. There is maybe a 1/4'' of play on each side, someone please chime in!

YES!! Your chain is fine. Normal amount of play.

I hope you are still replacing it though.

On my new set I had .160 thou of slack with the chain pulled tight on on side and measuring between the LS2 tensioner and the chain. Without the tensioner, I would say that .300 total movement is very possible.

Alright thanks guys, I was considering replacing the chain with an LS2 chain or a double, however I really didn't want to take the oil pump off. Im glad to hear its a normal amount. I hear changing the timing chain isn't as neseccary as people make it to be.

^^^x2 It will only add an extra hour or so to your project. But if it breaks in a few months, then you'll have a much bigger project on your hands. Might as well just beef it up while you're in there and it's only like $35 for a new LS2 timing chain

Replace it... Ls2 timing sets are much nicer. I just changed mine, it's not so hard. I seen a post on here a few weeks ago where the TC came off and got trapped between the crank gear and the block... It ripped the front of the block off....

Heavier, much more stout feeling. You can replace the chain and both gears for $75-$100 bucks. I'd say it's def worth the $ and couple extra hours work.

Hmm I am thinking about getting an LS2 chain. That chain should be good enough for an MS3 cam right?

Texas Speed has it on their website. I just put mine on when I did my MS3 swap.
