Well let's start small. What are your instruments reading? Any SES light?

If it wasn't misfiring (indicated by flashing check engine light), a lack of air intake will certainly bog it down, so the air you heard may be an intake leak. The engine light has many sensors that monitor the intake/ignition/exhaust, so you should keep focus on that, but also remember that tamperings/mods done by previous owners could disable these sensors.

The OEM replacement cat is very, very expensive, but it will bolt up in place of the one you have now. Most people on this board buy an aftermarket cat (a universal cat for about $75-100) and have it welded in place of the stock cat. Total expense would be about $150-200.
Fix the cat first and then see if you still have a problem.

You could always have a muffler shop remove your cats and then go play and see how it feels. might save you some money and eliminate another thought.

for the universal one they told me its about 250 bux but the guy at autozone was just telling me it probably wont fit on right and u would have to cut and keep welding is that true?
