Default Car keeps on slipping out of third gear, or not engaging..

Moral of the story, the past three days, when I shift into third, sometimes it won't engage...car has 40K on it, I don't dump the clutch, powershift, or any of that ****...rest of the gears are fine..any ideas? i was thinking about getting my tranny fluid changed out but I figure old/bad fluid wouldn't be the reason it's happening...granted, it doesn't happen everytime i shift into third, but if i'm not paying attention, it'll feel like it's engaging, but it won't..

i've been drivin stick for four years without ever blowing out a tranny, clutch, and i don't even really beat on the car...any suggestions??

mine was doin somethin like that, third would grind something awful and then catch. mechanic who rebuilt it said that third was almost completely shot and the synchro was bad.

Mine will do that if I don't pay attention. If it doesn't go completely in it'll pop out and grind a little.

yeah, it's just kinda strange b/c i've never had any problems before, except for i think the synchro is broken in first gear, b/c i've raced before, gone to shift from second to third, and it's gone into 1st, which as far as i understand, isn't supposed to happen b/c the tranny should stop it from doing so...

i'm just hopin my tranny isn't goin out...that'd be such a bitch to replace right now..

Sounds just like my 2002 camaro. When I shift third sometimes it grinds and goes in or it goes in and literally 2 seconds later it pops out of gear. Time for a rebuild lol

Might not need a rebuild if the syncros are OK. My 99 did the same thing... I ended up upgrading the shift fork to a steel one due to the fact I bent the original.

you will want to check the shift fork the syncros and the keys. if it does need a rebuild be sure to upgrade to a steel shift fork and billet keys.

Mine does the same thing. I've heard it something wrong with all T56's, a shitty 3rd gear that doesn't always engage.

What year T56 ?
Many changes to this trans from Borg Warner to Tremec
If its a Tremec it sounds like a bent aluminum shift fork.

Join the club dude. Mine started the same way and now it rarely wants to go into 3rd. Most of the time it will grind and pop out. I have been driving around the past 10k skipping 3rd. It's time for a rebuild. BTW my car had 20k on it when it started doing it. Thanks to the shitty hydraulics.

When I bought my Firehawk w/ 27,xxx miles on it, it would occasionally kick out of gear.

I think someone mentioned before GM decided to use an aluminum shift fork which bends. Third gear then doesn't engage all the way which then starts breaking off teeth. My car has 43,xxx on it now and it's gotten really bad. I don't use third gear anymore. The only way I can get it into 3rd is a hard WOT shift. Sometimes that doesn't even do it and sounds like a grenade went off under the car.

Mine would kick itself out of gear on a curvy road where you are on/off the gas.

A tick rebuild is in my near future.

GM had a TSB about this problem in 2000. I tried to get the local dealer to help me out on it but they wouldn't.

mine just started doing the same thing, mine has 100,000 miles though. it won't engage right or grind a little in 3rd gear. And in 4th gear mine will go in but sometimes won't come out to shift. what's the deal.

Third and fourth gear both use the same aluminum fork. Time for a rebuild.

I would say its a combination of the crappy aluminum fork and the Syncro Assembly spring keepers are missing or damaged(common problem in the T56)....

Get a manual and pull the trans. Its not to hard to rebuild if you are patient and have a big table to lay all the stuff out on. I have rebuilt mine twice first time I did all the syncros and sycnro blocker rings second time I had to repair a castastrophic failure of one of them damn spring keepers for Syncro Assembly. The key came out and damaged both 5th and 6th gears and the syncros for em
