Default Grinding Calipers on a Street Car: Opinions wanted.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-raci...ers-101-a.html

Having recently seen this great post that shows what it takes to put a Drag rim like a weld on the car and have it spaced properly, we need to GRIND!

I am a little crunched on the $$$ at the moment, but a person has a set for sale, and provides the already grinded calipers.

My fear as this car is 98% street driven, will have street miles and I do use the brakes. I try to compression brake the motor when I can on the m6 but there will be times I get stuck in the rain or in adverse conditions.

My fear is with the meterial removed, that something could lead to a cracked caliper or something disasterous.

I have consulted with quite a few people, and I would like to just throw this out as a discussion peice. Any person exp, or seen something happend. Internet exp I would say unless you can link it to a viable source is grains of salt.

Thanks for the read.

My other alternative would be Bogarts, because I do expect to run a 15 x 10" rear rim on a 28" tall M/T ET Drag.

Ive ground alot of brakes before and never had any problems. Just grind enough for the wheels to fit and stop. I would grind alot to get close then paint the calipers bolt the wheel on and rotate it. If the wheel rubbs it will show. Then just grind where it rubbs.

I've ground the calipers on plenty of cars, never had a problem. Just like they said, Just do it until it quits rubbing then stop.

Been driving around on grinded LS1 brakes (for 15x8 prostars) for 25K miles without issue.
Take your time, grind what's needed (use paint or crayon to determine what is rubbing).

I'll have them (the brakes) off my car in a few weeks if anyone needs a set.
I'm going to an S60 with strange race brakes.

There have been a few guys to break their calipers from grinding. It ain't pretty when it happens. I would say the odds of it happening aren't great, but its a proven possibility.

who was it..... MattD, that crashed a car a few years ago, form his ground caliper braking in half. **** that I got some wilwood rear brakes used. But there 1000s of others that are fine. If anything I'd get some worn past 1/2 way pads amd grind for that. Even sand down what I had, and just run 1/4 killed pads every 15K miles. Some guy have new hawk or a aftermarket pad thats really thick, and have to grind a ton.

May be a good idea. When i ground my calipers down, i had pretty worn out pads and it didnt take much to clear the draglites. I then swapped brake pads out, and the calipers required ALOT more grinding. The calipers have been ground now for like 3.5 years now with no issues however.

the rears are no biggie imo. but i ground the fronts too and my braking suffered dramticly when i had to stand on the pedal. which happens frequently if you street race. so i bought rims that fit the front with no grinding and put a new set of calipers on and my brake feel came back and it stopped waaaay better. the rears i left as i still have pro stars out back.

Or just buy a set of wheels that fit over stock brakes. After seeing Matt D wreck his car due to a ground calipar coming apart, I decided to sell my Prostars, go back to stock brakes, and put a set of these on. They were built for the street.

This is a very good discussion, seems to be opinions on both sides. I will be making a decision at some point, havnt done anything yet but, the fact that some people have crashed is an area for concern.

Camaro396, what is the brand again on those?

I would rather just drop the cash on a set of brakes and/or rims to clear stock brakes and have the piece of mind that I didn't remove material (strength) from the caliper. Thousands have done it, I know of one who had a caliper come apart. One is enough for me.

Grinding the calipers, if you just had to touch them a little bit I could see.

But what has to be done to get a set of weld's on a car I personally do not feel is safe.

Especially in a 4000 lb car. Just asking for trouble. And god forbid something happen... the insurance company sees the calipers ground and the accident was braking related, you're done and will get nothing for the car.

Another situation, that's a no good.

I say no. I ground my rears and they started getting very thin before the paint stopped rubbing off. I also used a 5/16 spacer. It seems as though it is car to car.

i just touched the top fins of my rear calipers for my 9.25"x15 convo pros in the rear and it is the correct back spacing 6.5" so the rim is tucked in nicely... my 275/50/15 MT drag radial sits very flat...my front convos have no spacer and require no grinding...just another option for a street driven car...
