Angry thought it was fixed, but its not, noise when turning,,, grinding, howling

its a long story, but comes down to when i turn sharp and slow, i have a "howl" noise that when u go slow enough, sounds like a grind. Thought i had this fixed, but its still there. Rear end was checked (thats what i thought it was) and its fine. Plz read through the link below and let me know if any ideas are out there. From this point i guess i will be pulling the tranny (my first time) to see whats making it sound like a rock polishing machine

Thanx for any ideas you can offer.

Hmmmm, weird one for sure. I may have missed it, but, how many miles and how many of those have YOU put on it?

the car has 45000 right now
i bought the car with 29000 on it, and the Spec 3 clutch had roughly 10000 miles on it at the time of purchase, so the clutch has about 26000 miles on it. (and Nate did track this car) Its just hard to beleive my clutch could be making these noises when i turn my wheel. I do have a nasty vibration in any gear, starts around 1800 RPMs, soooo, maybe it could be the clutch,,,, just the turning thing that really has me confused. I have put on new brakes, tires, had it aligned, rear end checked twice by different folks, its fine......

Guess its coming down to just droppin the tranny and hopeing to find a fuked up clutch.
The clutch still grabs, like its healthy, drives great, etc....so, im at a loss...

My clutch grabs too only gets a little sticky some times but if I turn sharp and quick I get a loud squeal too. It sounds like its from the front of the car. I need to change pads and thought it could be that but this thread has me thinking twice.

Car is at Didley's in Metamora as im writing,, (owner has a completely stock 1980 Form..) and man i hope they find it,, when i pulled in to their lot of 5/29/09, after taking it to a local dealership here on 5/26/09, it has went from a howling, to a "somethings barley hangin on and sounds like its gonna fall off" noise.
More to come when they have an idea, im sure it will be today or tomorrow

after much looking (they tore in there pretty good to inspect) nothing rear related is wrong, they changed the oil and additive (this is like the 4th time in the last year) and the howling noise is gone (odo reads 43773, picked it up Friday 6/5) so i guess i will see how long it stays gone
Still have the vibration at 1800 rpms, any gear,, im still torn on if it could be my clutch. It does drive great, kinda noisy if its cold, not uncommon for a Spec 3,,,(not warmed up at all, turn the key and go) so i dont know,,, if you have any ideas on my vibration in any gear at 1800 rpms and above, let me know

Spec 3 has about 25000 miles on her. vibration seems most noticable at around 1800 rpms, any gear. no other tranny issues are there. (knock on wood)

Got me to thinking, since you said it happens when you turn...wheel bearing, maybe? Have you had those checked? Front and rear?

all the bearings (carrier and axel) were replaced when the rear went in last July (only a few hundred miles ago) I didnt mess with the pinion bearing as the pinion had no movement that would indicate it was shot.

i dont really have any issues with noise from up there,,you could deffinetly tell it was the rear making the noise,,, it was pretty loud. im considering that one done, just need to get the viberation thing figured out,,,,im guessing its either the crank pulley, or the clutch... and since the pulley is the cheaper of the two,, im starting with that first. Man, that'd be great if it was the pulley, but my luck ususally dictates otherwise, so ill probably be getting a new clutch as well.

Default Closure!!!!!

and about damn time

my stupid *** has filled my new to me, but used rear (moser 12) with synthetic oil,, but after changing to conventional oil, AND putting on some miles to prove it,,,, the noise is gone. Hard to believe that something as simple as the type of oil would make such a terrible noise, but it did. I have stumped many mechanics in the process

The Eaton posi in my M12 likes it much better, and so do i... i filled with the following, in the order listed

1. 4oz GM additivie
2. 1 qrt lucas conventional oil stablizer
3. 2 qrts valvoline conventional 80/90 oil
filled till it spilled in the side fill on the moser housing.

only a vibration issue left (seperate from this one) and i will be issue free (first time since the fall of 07!!)

Thanx for the help everyone!!!!

Pretty crazy to think that just changing the fluid cured it, I personally never would have thunk it, unless it had the wrong fluid in it to begin with
Either way, glad you got it squared away. Did you figure out your vibration?

nope, still on that one,,,,, and even though im sure its engine related.. (same rpm vibration in any gear or in neutral) im still going to lift her back up and go over every freakin thing under the car that i have touched since i put my rear in,, the way i look at it is this,, it didnt happen this bad until the rear went in. IT did vibrate in neutral revs before the new rear but not the whole rpm thing,, so something is either getting worse, or i have two issues.. knowing my luck, its 2 issues, and one of them is getting worse....

i also have a banging or clunking noise when putting it in reverse,,,,, could be the new rear u-joint i put in,,i did spill bearings when i installed it, but put them all back in,, maybe i missed some or something,, not sure....
,,, maybe ill get lucky......doubt it, but maybe.

Do you think i would "see" the DS going crazy if i lift the car and run it to the desired range of vibration (1800 -2500) if it were the issue?

but then im just kiddin myself as how could my DS be the culprit when i sit in the gargae and rev it and the steering wheels jumpin around on me

wires and plugs are only a year old, but they will be getting pulled tonight for inspection. Im going to try to do a compression test as well (never done one) to see if any thing comes up there too..
