Manual Trans Fluid thats safe for LS1?
Hey guys. I remember reading about how some MTF can be bad for our M6's. I am using Mobil 1 ATF now and it's fine, but can anyone confirm if theres Manual Trans Fluids that are safe for our cars? I just want to make sure before the change. Thanks.

If you want a thicker fluid, either GM or Pennzoil Synchromesh has gotten good results for quite a few F and Y body owners. Usually it's gearboxes with worn blockers and/or synchros, they seem to work better with the thick stuff.

As for fluid, as long as it is rated for the Dexron III requirement, you should be fine. I've run the cheap ****, Mobil 1 ATF, and even Torco ATF...to me the Torco shifted the best, but I had to order it, and it isn't cheap at all. I have the cheap-o store brand stuff in there right now (I was tracking down a leak), and it shifts decently, but usually best when fully warmed up.
There was a huge thread on here a while back where we went on for pages and pages about the best oil - there was no general consensus, but that's no surprise. Lots of good testimonials in there though for the different brands out there...

Ok, I just thought of another quick question. Now, keep in mind that I'm not a Tranny expert by any means. My last engine swap gave me a huge headache trying to remove the fill plug on the Tranny. A buddy of mine figures it would be better since the engines out and on the ground anyway, to just remove the shifter plate and add the fluid there. Is this a possibility or are there any drawbacks to this method? Sorry if it's a dumb question.

I normally leave the shifter out anyway when putting the trans back in. Then pour the fluid in before you put the shifter in.
I think is what you were asking.

As for recommondation, the factory manual says Dexron III due to the fact that they used the fluid in both Auto and Manual and for GM to have 2 seperate fluids would be cost prohibitive.
At around 30-33k I put in Penzoil Synchromesh and its the exact same stuff that GM Parts dealers sell but can be had in any Major retailer. I notice an improvement in the stock trans and really responded well on WOT shifts.
There are alot of lubricants out there. So there will be opinions, go with what you feel comfortable.

...and you'll never get a straight answer. Everyone has different opinions about the subject, just like engine oil. It usually boils down to personal preference, and sometimes that ends up being nothing more than "Well...my dad used it in all our cars, so it must be the best."
As for filling, I usually remove the shifter and pour it in there (although this is also how I've spilled ATF on my carpet), and then remove the fill plug to let any excess drain off (not sure if it does any harm or not, but why not?). Definitely make sure the driveshaft is installed though...it will leak if the slip yoke isn't in place.
