Default Blew my 10 bolt at the Track with Full Bolt Ons and Street Tires, WTF?!

I took my car to firebird raceway tonight in Phoenix just for fun since one of my buddies was trying to get some new times on the spray in his Goat. I actually have never ran at the track before, only on the street . So I got a couple runs in, clicked off a 13.3 @109 with a shitty 2.2 60' which was decent for the 3800 DA. Not to mention my buddy's full bolt on LS2 goat on BFG drags ran a 13.6 @106 (off spray) so I figured it was good.

Well I go in for my last run and they just re-prepped the track. I Launch about 3K on my pretty much bald BFG Gforce Sport street tires and it starts wheel hopping. I let off right when it happened then hit it again, and it started wheel hopping really bad at the top of first and I tried to let off but heard a bang. I turned off in the return lane and I heard clunking as I went by, then when I went to park I heard another series of loud bangs. I ended up getting it towed back to my house.

My car has 120K on it and the mods are headers, ORY, cutout, LS6 intake, lid, Koni shocks/strano springs, Spec 3 clutch, and 275/40/17 street tires. I knew the 10 bolt was weak but I never though it was THAT weak!

What was wierd is I've launched my car a fair amount (even make 4 runs at the track tonight before breaking) and the car has NEVER wheel hopped. I know thats what killed the 10 bolt but again I've never seen my car of even my buddy's SS wheel hop that bad.

As far as the 10 bolt goes, luckily I didn't **** up the diff cover or lose an axle or anything. It definitely sounds like theres loose metal in the diff. I think I just need to get a new one.

So my thoughts:
-Are 10 bolts easy to swap out? Didn't look too bad
-What's a decent price for a 10 bolt?
-Ideally I'd like to buy one with 4.10s and be slightly strengthened. I have a set of richmond 4.10s in my garage but don't really wanna pay to install them if I can find a 10 bolt with them already.
-Don't have the cash to spend on a 9" or 12 bolt at the moment
-Anyone selling a 10 bolt with 4.10s near Phoenix?

Seriously though, blown 10 bolt on street tires and full boltons?!

1. Fairly easy to swap
2. $150-250 Tops
3. 3.73s are the highest numerical gear I would put in a 10 bolt. Sure 4.10s can last in a 10 bolt. But from what I have seen, not very long

Sorry to hear that man. Unfortunately, the ten bolt rear end developes quite a bit of wear and slack in them after 100k and they loosen up quite a bit. The age/wheel hop is definitely what caused your failure.

Sorry to hear. If you plan on doing anything with the car scratch the 10 bolt idea. At the very least spend as little as possible to get up (no gears) and running and save for a good rear. Money in a 10 bolt is like wiping your *** with $20's LOL

I wipe my *** with cnotes all day then.. LMAO..

first things first.. Take a good look at what is messed up.. then go from there. could just be the ring/pinion, maybe more.. who knows without crackin the cover.

Then you need to look at what your doing with the car, you said you dont take it to the track that often? Then why spend 2500 on a rear that you are not going to really use?

Once you have all that figured out, if you havent figured out what caused that nasty wheel hop, you need to, that put alot of stress on the rear, and if you stayed in it, that is almost 100 sure what caused your little issue here.

just my 2 cents... but you can make a 10 bolt hold up.. atleast until you start launchin at 5500rpm, with 12 psi DRs..

dont dump the clutch, slipping would help save the rear too. im slipping from 4k and all the way out by the 60' and almost down to 1.8's on bone stock suspension and a nitto =]

I felt the same way when mine popped.

245 All Seasons, Lid, cutout, muffler, and tune were literally the only mods and I broke a tooth off of each of the spider gears...

I was under the impression 10 bolts could break under stock power lol, let alone full bolt ons.

i was told by a former GM mechanic that the 10 bolt was only designed to handle 275 hp..wich is even more shady considering our motors came rated at atleast 325hp..some of us have just been a little luckier than others..

It was the SPEC clutch that did it! I grenaded my stock 10 bolt on the highway speedshifting to 4th and I was only at 370hp rwhp!

wheel hop is the absolute worse thing for the drivetrain. It stresses it to the max,and is the fastest way to find a weak part.Sucks when it happens too.

Absolutely. I crack up when people are shocked their 10 bolt breaks after beating the wee out them. I've seen a stone stock 30k mile 6 speed car destroy a 10 bolt on the stock eagle F1 tires.

Sucks man, I just went to the track last night and ran a best of 13.3 @ 110.9mph I did 5 runs, and I found slipping the clutch down the 60' gained me my best 60' of 2.1. I started trying to dump it and was pulling 2.2's and putting a good amount of stress on my rear.
