Default 5.3 or 5.7

Hi, I can get a great deal on a 5.3 LS engine, but wanted to know, is it worth building or should I just wait and get a LS1/6 or LS2? How much power can a 5.3 LS engine handle?

Also, will a T56 bolt right up to the 5.3L engine?

Its hard to say whats worth building and whats not without knowing the specifics of the 5.3 you're looking at. I picked a 5.3 for my 84 camaro build because they are plentiful, they are cheap, and all ls components swap over. The 5.3 blocks are essentially an iron version of the LS1, they can actually be bored to about 3.905 safely. Ive heard those iron blocks are capable of supporting 1000+ RWHP. Yes a t56 will bolt up but you will need a LsX flywheel and clutch.

What would be needed to install a TH350 or Th400 tranny on the LS motor? I'll add a T56 later on down the road.

I think all you'd need is a spacer. The bell housing bolt pattern should be the same as long as your keeping it chevy/chevy and not going to a pontiac/olds/buick tranny.

And the spacer should work with both the LS1 5.7 or the LM7 5.3.

Will an LS2 Flywheel/Clutch/Pressure Plate fit on the 5.3L (LM7)?

EDIT: After more searching...yes, it works!

So will the spacer allow me to keep the transmission in the stock location, and prevent me from shortening/lengthening the drive shaft?

OK, picked up the motor today and it turns freely and everything. A long block(minus the intake) 5.3L for only $200. The guy said it ran and the reason he was selling it is because he needed the space in his garage and he was into traditional small block Chevy engines. Be prepared for a ton of questions.

This forum is a wealth of knowledge.
Using the search function will help you out a bunch.
The only good thing about the traditional SB chevy motor is, it is cheap to build....but, you get what you pay for.
Your 5.3 should easily take a comparably built "traditional" 350...and get better MPGs (if that makes a difference to you).
Is this going in your '74 Vette??

Yeah, I'm thinking about dropping it in the vette. I've been searching through threads the whole day, but I might need to ask a couple of questions that I haven't been able to figure out, but I'll keep searching and if nothing, I'll ask the questions. Thanks
