Default 6.0 L92 heads

hi guys, i have been taking in a lot of knowledge from your great forum on these LS engines the last few weeks.

i dont own any ls equipped car though, and dont really plan on it.

My hobby is Rock Crawling, and this is my toy.

current engine in it is the stock straight 6 on propane with a nv3550 (crappy 5 speed)

well i am ready for some power. i found a guy in center, TX that built an engine straight from this magazine article:
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ads/index.html

its a car craft mag ad that they took a cast iron 6.0 truck engine and bought the new L92 heads on with a cam and carb and made 550hp with 425 torque

he has ran this engine for about 1000 miles in a 68 chevy truck around the streets and including numerous trips down the strip. he pulled this engine out and now has a full L92 408 or 418 stroker engine running 10.50s with nitrous

anyways i talked with him about the engine and am planning on buying it to put in my rock buggy with a th350

he has put ARP rod bolts and ARP headbolts in it when he rebuilt it with the new heads and put all new bearings, seals, rings, and 1 new rod and piston.

it does not include any accessories OR intake, throttle body, wiring or computer. he does have a new water pump for it.

he is asking $2000.00 for it now after coming down from 2500

what do you guys think?

Well I paid $1300 including taxes for my long block lq4, came with intake, fuel rail, and TB all the way down to the oil pan. And since a pair of complete l92 cylinder heads will run you from $600 - $900, Id say its a fair price. And plus you know the engine is a runner.. You will need a different intake for the l92 heads though...they have square intake vs the ls1/ls6 cathedral port heads.

Good Luck

thanks for your reply.
the engine doesnt have any intake, i am assuming i will need the L92 intake.

would like to have a cable operated throttle body also. The aftermarket ones are a little out of my price range. Is there an OEM one big enough to run right with the L92?

**found that there are no 90mm GM throttle bodies for a cable

guess i will be using the DBW, why do people want the cable operated ones?

i will be on and off the gas a lot in my application, will the DBW work just as good?

Doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. I'm in process with an LQ4 build with L92 heads.
I think getting the that engine already setup where he has it would be a sweet even without an intake.
For rock crawling, I'd look at the torq characteristics on the L92 setup, they tend to move the torq and power up the rpm range. I'd make sure thats what you want.

For rock crawling-IF you want good low end torque I'd just pick a lq4/9 and put in a need specific cam, that way you have all you need and maintain better low rpm torque. L92 heads push the torque to the upper rpm- at least fwiw.

heres the dyno sheets from their tests

Dyno Day
Test 1: is the best power curve from last month's story using the stock LQ4 6.0L iron heads, GMPP Hot cam, GMPP carbureted intake manifold, Holley 750-cfm carb, and Kooks 1-3/4-inch headers.
Test 2: is where we jump directly to the big L92 heads combined with the larger Comp hydraulic roller camshaft. We also increased carburetor size to an 850-cfm Holley to make a little more power at the top while retaining the Kooks 1-3/4-inch headers.

Comparing peak numbers, the torque gained only 14 lb-ft, but the horsepower jumped a staggering 68 hp with the combination of the larger cam and the L92 heads.

There are a few options for a cable throttle body, FAST 90 and FAST 92 to say a few. There are a few others as well.

he told me the compression ratio wasnt that high on the engine.

if i were to get the heads shaved to bump up the compression, that would bump up my torque numbers right?

i still need to be able to run some 93 octane fuel though

could put a single plane (or better yet, the new dual plane intake from edelbrock for the l92's, since you will want more low end) efi intake on it and put a 4150 cable driven throttle body on it.

or

you could make it carb-retarded.

nice lookin rig btw

Question

Alright, heres another option that the same guy has.

2006 Cadillac Escalade 40,000 miles
Complete Vehicle totalled. He bought it for the seats. im guessing it has the lq9 in it. 345hp 390lbs/ft torque.
4L65E
$2700.00 for the whole truck

its complete. i would have a harness, computer, complete engine and transmission. (really didnt want the transmission)

i could get it and pull the engine and maybe the tranny and bring it to the scrap yard and get a little money back maybe.

what mods could i do with that? im wanting throttle response, something that will launch from an idle and turn about 6000 when i need it to.
