Default Newb bump stop question

Now....what exactly to the bump stops do in the transmission/shifter? I was told that they hold the shifter in a gear?

Anyways, I have a MGW shifter, but i haven't installed it yet. Some people have said that they dont like MGW because it doesn't have bump stops, but others say it doesn't matter because the T56 has internal bump stops.

Anyways, for a daily driver street car, are bump stops required? Am I at risk of breaking anything? Anything I should be aware of?

Thank you very much for your help.

The T56 has internal stops, no need for shifter stops. Some other/older transmissions don't/didn't have internal stops, so the shifter stops were required to keep the synchros from being forced over their travel and causing wear..

So, do the stops literally stop the synchros from moving too far into the gear or something?

Also, how strong are the internal stops on the T56?

From what I can tell the Stop in a T56 just prevents the Fork from pushing the Slider Collar too far into the Gear..which can result in the Fork Pads being destroyed. It's actually a little part that is machined, it's pinned on the Shift Rail and follows a Pattern Guide Plate. It's pretty fckn tough.

I have a pic of it from when I built mine..

Here is my build thread..pretty good pics in it to see how a T56 goes together, and pretty much most of the upgraded parts.

So basically, I have no worries unless I'm trying to break something?

People have been saying how good the MGW shifter is, and it made me nervous when others have implied it's bad for durability!

If you mess the Shift Pattern Plate up you have bigger problems..lol

It's a pretty tough tranny..why are you trying to break it? Lol..

And what is the advantage of a on shifter stop? Just for the ability to adjust the throws?

I've seen a pattern plate and the slotted piece that goes through it banged up pretty good (presumably higher-mile LT1 box w/ a rebuild on it already so you know it had some miles on it.)

I think a shifter with stops is a reasonable idea, with how the 3/4 keys drop out of the hub and get snapped or sheared. In theory, the factory method of stops should be all you need. In reality, people kill keys because it's not.

I'm going to assume he factory stops are fine for me, and I'm keeping the MGW. Thanks all!
