Default Car is falling out of third gear

Car falls out of third gear while letting of the gas then slowly start to throttle in again. Am i doomed to having a worn 3/4 syncro? Is there anything else i can look at? Clutch has 20K on it Spec 3+, fluid is full but might need bleeding. I know the fluid in the tranny is old.

Sounds like either the 3rd/4th gear synchro or the 3/4 shift fork. Either way you have the pull the trans apart, so you might as well figure on an overhaul, with new blockers, keys, pads, ect.

Worn trans fluid won't make it pop out of gear, and neither will the clutch.

There's a TSB on jumping out of third under the conditions you describe. It requires replacing the shift fork, blocker ring, synchro :

M/T - Jumps Out Of Third Gear

File In Section: 07 - Transmission/Transaxle

Bulletin No.: 01-07-29-003A

Date: May, 2001

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Transmission Jumps Out of 3rd Gear (Replace Shift Fork, 3-4
Synchronizer Assembly, 3rd Gear Blocker Ring and 3rd Speed Gear)

Models:

1999-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1999-2000 Pontiac Firebird
with Manual Transmission (RPO MM6)

This bulletin is being revised due to a change in part numbers. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-29-003 (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).

Condition

Some owners may comment that the transmission jumps out of 3rd gear.

Cause

Condition may be caused by inadequate travel of the 3-4 synchronizer assembly due to the 3-4 shift fork being out of specification or bent.

Correction

Notice : Please review the appropriate section of the Transmission Unit Repair Manual for correct disassembly and assembly instructions. When performing this bulletin, ALL parts listed need to be replaced. The condition originally occurs because of the 3-4 shift fork being out of specification or bent. This eventually results in damage to the synchronizer assembly, the blocker ring and the speed gear. Replace the 3-4 synchronizer assembly, the 3rd gear blocker ring, the 3rd speed gear and the 3-4 shift fork.

Parts Information

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Just a side note; check to see if the shifter lever is hitting the bump stop or the console while in third gear. Probably not the case, since it's been 20K without issue, but, it's worth a look.

Mine was doing the exact same thing. Just tore it apart about an hour ago and found it was just the shift pads. There is a chance you might get lucky too.

Hopefully should start it in a week or so. Going to wait till my Magnaflow catback comes in for my WS6 before i pull apart the Z.

Not the shifter it goes all the way in and unless i hold it there for a sec it falls out.
