Default Question about 98' camaro LS1 engine

I have a 1998 camero ls1, i was told by this performance shop that is i put a after market cam in it that the engine will blow something with the crack or something another. Is this true, because i have suffered the internet and can't find anything on that happening. Thanks for the help!

So are you saying your block or heads has a crack?

If not and your engine is good condition then you don't have any worries as long as you don't go too big of a cam with out fly cutting you pistons. I k ow many guys with 98 engines with decent sized cams.

I think the only issue you'll run into is retuning the '98 PCM, something about it being different or whatever. As for the block, unless you already HAVE a crack then there's nothing to worry about...

Nah, '98 PCM is no problem for a basic heads/cam setup and a decent tuner. It's harder with an aggressive forced induction tune though.

I just do not know what this guy is talking about the cam breaking the crank shaft, but he got me worried because i went to his shop and saw the crank shaft, it was just scuffed up, so i have no idea. I am new to this ls1 stuff, first time with a v8 period. Thank you guys for the help and advise, i will get you the spec on the cam when i buddy give me the link.

The only way that an aftermarket cam will cause engine failure is if you don't install the proper valvetrain components to handle the cam, and/or you don't have proper piston-to-valve clearance.

There are thousands of people on this very site with '98-'02 LS1s that have aftermarket cams, many also have aftermarket/reworked stock heads, and various power adders including N2O and turbos/blowers; also stroker motors. These are very strong engines, so long as you use the correct parts when setting up the package you won't damage a *healthy* engine (all bets are off if the motor was in poor shape before the mods).

Numbers in sig with stock 98 bottom end and drive it several times a week. You need to find somebody who knows LSx motors to help you. Coming from the Gen I world I had a lot to learn and unlearn......... But I LOVE these things...They make power so easy...

I am saving for a LS2 402 and fully expect to have a mild mannered 500rwhp+ car....
