Default rear end sound when turning

Heard really rough grinding noise when turning slowly and heard a pop like sound like a release of some sort when coming to parking space. If I am driving straight on the highway and left off the gas and just barely engage the power train you can hear a whirling sound.

Also, when turning and in motion below 10 mph the car will completely stop unless i put some gas to it, dramatically.

Thoughts? I am thinking limited slip but your guess is probably better than mine.

This just happened to me. As for the grinding noise while turning, pull the axles out a couple of inches and notice if they are pitted, if so, the bearings and axle will have to be replaced.

I also thought my limited slip was going out and it ended up being my pinion bearing that was causing the whiring sound when engaging the gas and parking space popping (although my popping was more when reversing from my parking space)

Thanks very much for the reply. Yea i just popped the cover and no metal or anything. I also notice while its up on jacks that I can barely turn the rear wheels with my hands when its in neutral. Sound similar?

So what did you end up ordering parts wise?

I think I would have been fine with the offset bearing from Autozone, at least until I could get a hold of a new axle. I think I messed up putting the TA cover back on. It was late, I have to be out of my ex's house (where I was working on it) and I forgot to back out the bearing cap tension studs (which is what ended up destroying the Torsen IMO).

If you find the pitted axle, you can do it yourself pretty easy.

If you can find a new/used axle, you'll need a seal (Autozone PN 8660S $5.99) and bearing (AZ PN 5707 $15.99)

If you want to just get it going until you can find the axle, you will need the offset bearing and seal kit (AZ PN TRP1563TAV $29.99)

Regardless of which way you choose to go, you will need 2 quarts 75 weight real end gear oil, and a puller/slide hammer:

Puller: AZ PN 27129 $55 (or you can "Rent it" for free)
5 Lb Slide Hammer: AZ PN 27033 $30 (or you can "Rent it" for free)
Bearing installer: AZ PN 27119 $60 (or you can "Rent it" for free)

The tools, above can be rented for free at AutoZone by placing a security charge on a credit card, then returning them within a week. You basically buy them and return them.

These tools can also be bought at Harbor Freight if you have one in your area for much cheaper.

Hope this helps.

so do you have to use the puller to get the axle out to tell if it is pitted? Never did a rear before. Thanks so much this is all great info.

No, sorry about that. You only need the pullers/tools to replace the bearings.

Follow steps 1 through 6 one this link:

i attached a pic of the driver side axle. The other axle you can see where the bearings were but its completely smooth. Also is an added pic of the driver side bearing. Would the rtv balled up like that cause this?

I don't think it caused it, but that axle & bearing is the reason for the noise.

There was a guy selling two four channel axles for $100 shipped yesterday or the day before. Pretty good price. You have 4 channel axles by the way (that the gear on the axle).

If you can't find one locally, that offset bearing would get you running until you do.

I'd also pull the other one out and clean up everything real good. You probably have lots of "silver glitter" gear oil

Well no shavings this time around but I am sure that is because I changed the fluid about 4 months ago

Definitely going to do both sides though. Think I am going to get a direct fit moser. Thank you very much for all your help

So I picked up the parts and tools you suggested (thanks so much again, it makes it alot easier). What about the bearings on each side of the differential?

Hopefully you won't have to replace those.
Those are pressed on.

You can check them since you're already in there.

Pull the carrier out as per those instructions and feel the bearings, but be careful not to confuse the races, shims or bearing caps.

Most likely they're OK.

rocndav,

Do you think i may have the same problem you did with the broken connection between the ring and axle bearing??? I saw your pic of the axle and the ring plus i have an auto as well.

Let me know! I think im going to pull the whole thing out just to be sure.

After taking a second look you can see if I were to have that problem just by looking for cracks around the bearing area. Thanks anyway though

having an issue pulling the bearing with the puller from 27129 from autozone. It seems the giant washer isn't big enough to fit over the axle hole, it just slides right on top of the bearing. This does make sense to me because it needs to leverage somewhere to pull it? Thoughts?

I am laughing at my self right now

For those reading this post you attach the slide hammer to the bearing puller. Then slide the weight outwards to apply a hammer motion in the direction you want the bearing to go.

I can't believe that reading the directions on the box helped me with this hehe. First time for everything
