Default Has anyone upgraded the plastic cup for the shifter?

I recently found out that Tick makes a bronze replacement for the plastic shifter cup.

Has anyone done this? Does it feel any different?

Thanks.

humm, haven't heard of a bronze one. I replaced my plastic one with a new plastic cup, lol. Could be a nice swap if it is priced right.

They are about $25 and firm up the shifts a little bit. We usually install them in the more expensive rebuilds we do here.

yep, been there done that. didn't feel any different to me. It's a cheap part, and common sense to replace with bronze if you have the trans out and are working on it anyways.

Mine didn't feel any different when I installed the bronze bushing, but oh well...my transmission was already in good working order, so that's probably why.

Thanks for the replies guys. At 25 bucks I didn't know if it would be worth it. I had a tick stage 2 put in my trans I thought this might be the bee's knee's.

Plastic are fine until they break.

IIRC, brass presses in; plastic tends to need a quality adhesive.

Anyone else know if it needs to be pressed in? Can you heat the shifter rod with a torch and put the bushing in the freezer then slap it in there?

Is it bronze or brass? Hell I can't remember. I am going to have to check the website.

Bronze, and mine was a press fit. For better or worse, I tapped it in with a hammer. Probably wasn't the best idea, but I didn't know how else to do it.

I set the plastic, round end of a big screwdriver over the cup and tapped it in with a hammer until it was flush. I noticed my shifter tightened up over using the plastic cup. I wonder if I need to tap it in a little farther down?

Thumbs up

Thanks for the pic. That's about it I guess. I could hear the pitch change slightly once it bottomed out as I was tapping it in and I couldn't feel a gap between the cup and the base. Not about to take it apart again. I can definitely feel a difference in the shifter. I was always amazed how easy it was to go from gear to gear and now the effort has gone up just a little and the cup was the only change. I test fit the new cup to the shifter before installing it and it felt fine. Anybody know what type of epoxy they used to hold the stock piece in? That's some bad *** glue.

It used to be listed in the down-loadable rebuild manual on TTCs site but isn't anymore.

How much of a pain is it to remove the stock plastic cup? I want to install a bronze one in the near future.

Thanks

It's a pain. You don't have much room to leverage anything. It doesn't have much of a lip to grab on. If you do get a grip, it will break off. I ended using a small pair of side cutters and snipped away it until there was about 2/3 left and then it finally released. Put a rag under the mechanism to catch any small pieces of plastic.

I've never heard of this, but my shifter feels sloppier than it used to. I'm thinking of a fluid change soon, so maybe I should do this too.
