I've done it enough times to know you should use a sawzall. If you use any kind of cutoff wheel you risk lighting the carpet on fire. Its very hard to put out.

Also, the support for the automatic shifter is like 55 times harder than the body of the car itself - go figure.

If you want a step by step, basically I mounted the transmission fully, put the crossmember up, and then used a hammer and punch to put a dent at each corner of where the shifter base would be. Starts at the hole for the shift cable, then cut that one out connecting the points you made, and trim it bigger after you have that basic cut out. That way you don't get too big for the #6 boot, but also not small enough that the shifter can hit the tunnel if it torques a lot. I ended up with about 3/8 inch clearance all around which worked fine with factory rubbed mounts, and obviously would be fine with poly or solid mounts.

Do you have a picture of the hole?

Also, is the A4 mount the same on LT1 cars as it is on LS1? My issue is that I don't have the trans to mock up from the bottom at this point. So i am shooting to cut a blind hole thats not a shitbox.

Ah, his pic is a good reference. Hopefully my MGW is here tomorrow, I can take measurements of it for you then since I have to take it apart anyways, Would that help?

If you go to gmhightech website they did an a4-m6 swap in their tech articles. Nice thing about it is they also give dimensions for the holes you gotta cut. Thats how i did mine

I used a dremel and made a cardboard template from the shifter boot. Mine doesn't look like a hack job, and the boot fits almost perfect.

If I had to do it again, I would have used an angle grinder for the straight parts, and a dremel for the corners.

All I did was put machinist dye on the ridge of the 6 speed shifter boot and pressed it onto the transimission hump as a template. Drilled holes in the corners and cut it out with a jig saw. Worked like a charm
