Default Good low and mid torque cam for LS1

Being still quite a newbie with LS engine I wanted to make this thread. I have read a tons of posts regarding choosing a cam. Most of them would point me to choosing a "big cam" to get power. I am sure that is true and there is nothing wrong with that. But I would like to have a different approach. I am looking for good low/mid range torque cam. I want to have good usable power under the curve. Talking about good torque from idle to 5500 rpm. I am not really interested peak at powers between 6000-6800. Sure I will rev past 6k rpm sometimes but I dont spend my time above 5500 too often. Maybe 1% of time.

I have stock -01 LS1 with OEM 241 heads. M6 tranny and rearend has 3,55 gears. Headers and ported TB are used. No emission stuff on my engine because it is a swap to -68 Camaro. Curb weight around 3300 lbs.

I have found few to consider.

226/226 .591 on a 112LSA
224/220, .581/.581 116+0

TR 224-112" - 224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA
TR 224-114" - 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA

To make things even challenging there are 2 other major factors that narrow the choice.

1. I donīt want to have a "smelly" cam like GM ASA
- I am still in a process of understanding the overlap and LSA which I belive make a difference with the "smelly" factor. So no unburnt fuel on my headers, please.
2. Budget.
- I am on a tight one, so the first two cams are out (being custom grinds, I think)

Also I would prefer to keep the lift under .570/.570 if possible. Making life easier to valvetrain. I will anyhow upgrade to the yellow LS6 springs and while being there also the oilpump should be replaced.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Default Cam

I'd do either of the TR224's or even a 224/228 duration. Keep the LSA at 114 for a better lower end.

Or, if you want to step it up a bit, check out this thread for a 228/232

from what ive been told go your last choice there the TR 224-114" - 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA. will give a more factory style idle with out the big lump and unburnt fuel of a 110/112 lsa cam.

put a double row timing chain in for extra security, sounds like a good cam.

A 224 cam on a 114 LSA is going to make peak power around 6100-6200 rpm. If you want to make peak power closer to 5500 rpm, look for a smaller cam with a narrower LSA. A 216-218 intake lobe and a 220-222 exhaust lobe on a 111-112LSA with 4 degrees of advance. It won't be smelly because the overlap will be way less than 0 degrees at .050". Use something like Comp XE high lift lobes to keep the lift around .560-.570".

Very interesting thread, thanks. Spartan might be peaking too high for me though.

Yellow springs won't be sufficient on any of those cams you listed.

My vote goes towards a custom cam from Patrick w/ the new EPS lobes. I just got my 226/230 on a 114 +4 from them. Very nice piece.

Comp 224/230 115 LSA with the right tuner, you will never know there's a cam in it. Power from 2200-6800. Have it in my daily will never look back.

Take a look at TR230/224. Driveability of the 224 with more power and works great with stock style heads..

Thanks to everybody for your replies. Money wisely I really would prefer of the shelve cam and quite a few choices seems to be available.

Some of them have been around already a while (necessary not a bad thing at all).

Money wise shelves vs Custom grind is maybe $50-75. They are just as many if not more choices available for a custom grind then off the shelves...that's the beauty of it, you can pick and customize what you want. No brainer IMO.

212 intake & 218 exhaust duration @ .050 with 560 intake & 565 exhaust lift on 115 lobe separation

Something like this cam is pretty popular over here its pretty much a sleeper cam but seems to make good numbers
220/220 .581/.581 with your choice of 112,114,116 lsa
Its an off the shelf grind from Texas speed.

+1, you're low end and midrange torque should be better with a reverse split cam
