Default Engine Swap or H/C?

So I went up to my local performance shop where they do tunes, dynos, installs, everything. Originally we were just gonna get new H/C installed for my 01 Firebird Formula but he wants to put a new rebuilt 6.0 truck engine with Injectors, cam, stall, everything I need for 5k....So basically i gotta decide...H/C or Swap?

The Ls1 that I currently have does have 116k miles so its not to bad and its not gonna be a DD just a causal/drag car.

6.0...fresh build....more power, and fair price. 116k on the old motor is a little high to be putting performance parts in. Maybe look into getting your LS1 forged, and compare prices.

I hope that 6.0 doesn't still have the 317 heads?? if so I hope they installed dome pistons during the rebuild to bump the compression up.

Depends on what H/C comes on that rebuilt 6.0. I went with a nice sized H/C on my 346 for roughly $3K - is the extra 0.3L of displacement and having a fresh motor worth $2K to you? You can easily make 450RWHP with a good H/C setup on a 346.

That doesn't seem like too bad of a deal. The nice thing is you have a fresh motor, and if you want more power you can always build a 408 stroker using that iron block.

I would make him give you a casting number because the 317 heads flow the same as the LS6 heads they look identical ,but the 317 heads have a larger combustion chamber which makes less compression.

What shop are you considering? 580 at the crank is definitely possible - just a little easier to get with a 6.0 vs a 5.7.

Then just do a H/C/I swap to your engine and enjoy the car,,

plus 580hp ==upgraded transmission and rear end which you will have to spend more money for.

Are you on any of the local KS f-body forums? There's a couple of them with some members that might have an opinion about the quality of Wichita Dyno's work (I've heard of them just don't know how good they are).

Try ksfba.org - they have an active southern member section. Also nekm.org is another KS one with some guys that probably have more insight on that shop. Lastly you could try kcsr.org which is KC but lots of members in the area.
