Call GM and the NHTSA to Get Action on our Transmission Problems: Details Inside!
Thanks to the detective work of RKO, we've learned that the NHTSA is investigating GM for the transmission problems and failures that so many of have/are experiencing.
Frankly, I never thought it would even get that far, but obviously, enough people have complained to the Feds that they are, at least, looking into it. Based on RKO's conversation with GM, there is, at least, a possibility of a recall.
This is where we come in. If we could get a large number of members to call the NHTSA and GM to complain about our transmission issues, it's possible that a favorable outcome could be more likely.
Obviously, there are no guarantees, and it's also possible that nothing could come out of this. But since there's an open NHTSA investigation into the matter, there is no better time than NOW to take action.
Below is the complaint line for the NHTSA, as well as customer service phone for GM. The NHTSA does have an online form, however, with complaints, phone calls seem to have more impact...Especially irate phone calls.
Here's the info:
NHTSA Complaint Line
(800) 424-9153; Open 8AM - 8PM (EST)
If you don't have time to call, you can file online here:
https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/online.cfm
GM Customer Service
(866) 790-5600, ext 11105. This is a fellow named Larry who was very interested in hearing about more issues, as he indicated that the more complaints there are, the more likely action will be taken.
My complaint numbers will be posted on the first reply. Invite whomever does take action to the same, as the personal information is kept confidential, even if you have the number.
Maybe we can make a difference! Remember, you don't need to be in-warranty or currently having problems to file a complaint. You can voice your concern even if the problems have been repaired, so that at least, GM and Feds will know how wide-spread the problem is.
The worst that could happen is...NOTHING!
Lastly, do not use this thread to voice your doubts or whatnot about filing a complaint. Please keep responses on-topic by reporting any new information learned in speaking with GM or the NHTSA and by also logging complaint #s, if you so choose. If you have an opinion about this process, please start another thread or PM me.

I did some quick searching on nhtsa's web site and I didn't find any information regarding an investigation.
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/defects/
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/defects...hlyreports.cfm
I did find several filed complaints for our cars though, for example:
2006 Impala has 12 filed complaints, 2007 - 10, 2008 - 1, 2009 - 2.
2005 Grand Prix has 7, 2006 - 6, 2007 - 4, 2008 - 0
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/index.cfm
Some information on the investigation process:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...allprocess.cfm
A good blitz of complaints might get their attention. From the complaints listed, looks like VINs are needed, so maybe a collection of failure VINs will help.

I guess time will tell, but everyone who has not yet filed with GM and the NHTSA should do so soon, so we get the maximum impact.

I did a search as well, and it turned up nothing about a transmission investigation. I wonder if they told you about some sort of preliminary investigation that's not yet published.

I'm under the impression that you can't, but I'm not so sure. My trans needs to come out because I'm putting a converter in it, as well as the TEP valve body. Obviously, you can put a shift-kit into it without dropping the trans, so it may be possible.
Anyone know for sure?
