Replacing opti, do water pump at same time?
Hey everyone,
My opti is getting replaced this weekend. For you guys that have gone through the painful process, did you replace your water pump while you were at it? My car has 83xxx miles. I don't have any water pump leaks or anything, and I think the water pump may be original. Should I just go ahead and replace the water pump at the same time? Anyone know what the life expectancy on an LT1 water pump is?

Since the LT1 waterpump is gear driven off of the cam, you can pick up a little power from using an electric pump. But if you do so, I would recomend removing the gear from inside the timing cover so it's not just spinning in there doing nothing and potentially taking wobbling around.

This^, if the the bearing on the back of the pump looks fine and it wasn't leaking, i wouldn't see any reason to replace it. they're aren't hard to replace if they go bad anyway.

Thanks for the advice. I'll examine the water pump when it comes out and go from there. If it's still ok and not leaking, I might just keep it in there and save the money. If it ever does leak and go out, won't my opti be the first to go since it sits right under the pump?

I replaced my working factory waterpump with a parts store reman unit because i figured might as well since i had it off anyway. It left me on the side of the road 100 miles from home at midnight.
