Default Squeaking at idle and increases with speed

Hey Guys-

I've tried researching this issue, but the squeak I am hearing happens at idle as well as at speed. The sound resembles a throwout bearing squeak that happens at idle as well as under power.

Because it happens at idle, it tells me that it's likely not the carrier bearing issue, and if it were a throwout bearing I would think the engage/disengage of the clutch would make a difference.

Any ideas where to look?

Pulley or belt would be my first guess without seeing or hearing the car. On my car it will start to squeal about every three months. Not sure why but all I have to do is clean the grooves out on the power steering pulley and it goes away. I leave it running and just slide a small flat blade screw driver in the ribs of the pulley and you can literally hear it get quieter as you hit each rib.

Thanks for the quick replies. It does sound like it's on the back side of the motor/transmission, but tough to say because of the loud idle.

Is it safe to rule out transmission/clutch relates issues because engaging/disengaging doesn't seem to change anything?

funny question, but have you atleast raised the hood? Noises are almost impossible to track down from outside or even inside the car.

Haha fair question, but yes I popped the hood, got under the car, etc. I initially thought it was a tensioner as well, but seems like it coming from the back of the motor/trans.

It is possible that it is the throwout bearing but since it doesn't change, it's unlikely.

Spend some time with a stethoscope and pinpoint it since it happens all the time.

Used the stethescope lastnight, and ofcourse I couldn't reproduce the noise (car was cold). I drove it to work this morning and it was very loud when under power. I can be driving at say 70mph, then push in the clutch and it goes away. If I hit the throttle while the clutch is pushed in I will hear it again. I am at a complete loss....

I still say it's the waterpump. Can you rev it up when it's parked and check then or does it not do it?

Mine makes a sound sometimes. Seems to be more prominent in the am when i first start it. I think mine is the powersteering pulley though or maybe even the pump. I have an extra one so I'm not worried about it. I'll check the belt and try cleaning the pulley like someone else said first. It hasn't been happening as often lately and doesn't cause any issues so I've been putting it off.

I'm thinking this is it as well. Still running a stock style clutch, so I guess it's time to step up to something bigger and better anyhow.
