Installed built LS3 into 2001 Fbody now it sounds like I have a Supercharger, WTF?
I am getting close to finishing up my LS3 install into my 2001 Camaro SS M6. Ever since I started it up, it sounds like I have a supercharger installed, which I don't. What would cause a sound like that?
Here is what I have:
- Used 2,400 mile LS3 short block out of a 2009 C6 (saw the car it came out of)
- TEA ported LS3 heads
- 231 238 113lsa cam
- Melling oil pump
- Lingenfelter 58x to 24x crank converter
- New stock rockers with Comp Cams trunion upgrade
- LS3 valve covers
- LS3 valley cover
- LS3 intake
- NW 92mm TB
- Stock MAF electronics with Thunder Racing MAF ends
- LS1 Motorsports air lid
- TSP 1 7/8 LT Headers
I also changed my clutch since I had it all out to a South Bend Clutch.
I set up my PCV system like a LS6 style, just like the LS1howto.com Plugged the drivers side valve cover in the back, the passenger valve cover port goes to the TB, LS3 valley cover output goes to my stock PCV valve and then to the intake port.
With a little tuning the car drives fine. I already put over 60 miles on it but it still has a "Supercharger" whine to it. What would cause that noise?
My last combo was a LS1 with STG 2 heads and a 226 22 116lsa cam and it put down 412 RWHP and 396 RWTQ. The little bit I did get on it it really didn't feel that much faster than my old combo. I only went to 5,500 RPMS though.
I reused my EWP, alt, power steering pump, AC, coil packs.
As of right now, I don't have any codes setting. My oil pressure is great, about 45-48 PSI at idle warmed up and it goes up more as RPM increases.
I did use assembly lube on the cam, rockers tips, lifters and used regular Pennzoil 5w30 oil for start up. I'm going to change the oil before I dyno the car.
Any ideas? Coolant level is good and stable along with the oil level. Nothing leaks as well.
I'm hoping to get it on the dyno this weekend, shooting for at least 480 RWHP.

I did install a new SDPC underdrive pulley with new belts.
My car only has 17,000 miles on it and it didn't make that noise with the old combo a few months ago.
Later tonight I plan on working on it some more to get it ready for the dyno Saturday.

Pulled the belts off and it still does it. My wife looked under my car and said it was louder. I checked under the car and had her give it some gas and it almost sounds like its coming from the tranny. I only changed the clutch pressure plate flywheel and throwout bearing along with regular atf fluid. Tranny shifts fine just like before. Would the Melling oil pump make a whine noise?

It makes the same noise with clutch in or out I believe. I'll pay attention tomorrow. I changed the pilot bearing and throwout bearing as well.
I am using a LS2 timing cover withe a LS7 cam sprocket and LS3 timing chain and LS2 chain dampener I got from SDPC.

I am betting its either the pilot bearing or chain hitting the timing cover.

I had the same problem after I put my vararam and ls6 intake on. If its whining then it sounds like the pilot bearing. But all I did to fix mine was turn the A/C on and it went away.

Is the starter overrunning? (not disengaging from the flywheel)
I didn't realize you had a M6 trans.. although the sound of pilot and throwout bearings doesn't sound like a supercharger, more of a growl, or a squeak. Can you post a video? The single roller timing chain should NOT make noise.

Pull the dipstick out. The noise should go away. If the engine isn't respirating, the pvc will cause a vacuum in the crankcase. This usually causes the rear main seal to make interesting sounds. Many transmissions have been pulled to fix that "noisy" throwout bearing only to have the same sound there once the car was back together. I have been "gotten" twice by this and was furious at myself the second time (different car) because it was in the back of my head and I didn't act on it. lol!

This may sound dumb..........
I had a friend that unhooked his AIR connections but left the thing plugged in so for some reason that damn thing was stuck on or something (constantly running).
This is the only thing I could think of that might make a similar noise that hadn't been mentioned yet.

I really hate when people do "this^"
Anyways, my 416 did that for the first two years of its life. Sounded like it had a mild supercharger on it. Had a FAST 92/92 on it. Fast forward to this year, with a freshly swapped Super Vic and 4150tb and the sound is gone.
A simple test to see if it's your intake/TB, pull the lid. Leave the MAF connected and start the car. If the noise is louder, you have found the source of your noise
