That sucks. This is the second thread I've read today about somebody buying a shortblock and getting screwed by the seller.

I had a guy sell me a "good" head for an I5 engine I was building. Well, it ended up needing nearly $1000 in machine work. He said he was sorry but had no money...then I found out he bought a $15,000 car a couple weeks later. I wasn't sad when I heard he rolled it later that winter.

Rods are stressed the most by engine speed, not HP or torque. The loads they see at TDC and BDC are far more than they see during the power/thrust stroke. As a result, you're more likely to kill those rods by running high RPMs. Running more HP and torque shouldn't be the killer unless you're putting out crazy numbers.

That sucks that the rods are stock rods when the seller said they were forged!

If I bought a set of rods how much do shops usually charge to install a set of rods on a already setup long block?

The bottom end will have to be gone through. New bearings too so you might as well replace them.

I see this all too much on another board I am on. Happens a lot more in the racing side of things, but it happens to people just looking to have a bad street car too. Sucks either way no matter what, and your being a lot cooler than I would about it.

Look in the Sept '11 issue of hotrod. They did a twin turbo setup on a 4.8L. With race gas, @26.8lbs it put out 1203hp, on a stock bottom end. It had a bigger cam and head work done. I think 15lbs will be ok, with good tuning

Are they the older style rods or the newer (stronger) cracked cap rods?

Actually lots of torque can bend rods.

Sorry to hear that the stockers were usually good for @650-750 if you were nice to them so it just depends on what your goals for the car are etc... But if it were me I'd put it all together and tune it for 650-750 and see how it went, you may be supprised at how long it holds up as well. GL! sorry to hear about the engine not being what it was supposed to be.

Years ago, a guy came to me, told me about his engine. I was aware that building such a stroker with a stock pan, and a stock cam was not a possability. I had built a few and well, it wasnt easy and I was using .900 base circle cams. Anyways, I had a seperation of ways with the shop that the guy used(they were mad at me for telling the guy). They got more popular, and more popular, even on this board. Then they closed, and split with a bunch of peoples money. Atleast thats what people on this more wrote. Well, now one of them is popular again at another shop.......can do no wrong, and is everyones go to guy. I dont mind, maybe he has changed. I do wonder why in all the years , and the people envolved, no one ever went fast.....I mean no one.

Most people know......not all, but most esspecially if its being sold. I ve seen it happen locally with a guy a few times. I even asked, and he said well, Ill make it right if it comes back to me. I said yea, but what about all the labor to r&r the motor? He didnt care...so I dont really deal with him either, and he might be reading this.
